Coolant filter....preferances???

Ok boys,
I have my Fleetrite concentrate and Restore plus....what coolant filter system to buy? Seems like the top two are Sinister and Dieselrite brands..recommendations?

The cheapest one that holds water is probably the best, unless you care about snazzy anodizing and color-coordinated hoses.

I bought this one, it was the best price I found back when I was looking, but pricing has probably changed since then:

Sinister works well for me..I'm sure most of the others are good pieces as well. Many similarities in design. As someone else said above it's mostly a "looks" thing. Most use the same spin on filters. Here are the coolant filter part #'s we have so-far. Any of these will fit my Sinister and most of the other brands of filter kits, and have no SCA coolant additive.

Fleetguard WF-2077
Baldwin B5134
John Deere RE11992
Caterpillar 9Y4528
Cummins 3300721
Wix 24070
NAPA 4070
NAPA 4069 (one inch shorter)
AC-Delco WF-108
Fram PR3383
Donaldson P554685
Alliance (Freightliner) WF2077
CarQuest 89070
Hasting WC8
Purolator W54451

Same set-up as Sinister is the Xtreme Diesel Perforemance filter (same head unit, uses all the same filters and same mount). The main difference is the XDP kit comes with a 100% complete hose kit, and it's also cheaper (and they also run regular sales, like try code July10 and see if it works for another 10% off), it's also free shipping.

What I mean by a complete hose kit is you don't cut a single stock hose. Just drop a couple gallons of coolant and install kit and put the coolant back in. Maybe not that big a deal, unless you want to put it back to stock or move the filter to your next 6.0 .

here's a link to the filter kit:

I got the Diesel Sites system. Not as pruty as the others but I am happy with it.

The lines on the XDP look nice.

Only problem I ever had was in the cold the line leaked due to not so great clamps.
The bummer was I thought it was a huge problem when I did not find the source of the leak, because it only leaked at night since the days were warm.

This lead to me doing the whole EGR system delete. (which was a good thing too). But after I got the EGR delete all done and came out the next morning to find the same puddle of coolant on the ground and stayed up the next night to watch and found the real source....I could have just replaced the cheap clamp.... Doh

Rob, does that kit you have come with an aluminum mounting bracket vs the steel that comes with the sinister or PMM? I actually like the way the dieselsite base looks. I do prefer the silicone lines of the PMM kit however. I wonder if they would do one without the logo? It's not like you're driving around with the hood up but I really don't like the branding of parts when possible.

Yes, it is aluminum. The bracket I received was not the same as the one pictured above and was just a thin square with a 90 and holes. Looked a lot cheaper than the one above.
You could ask about the logo. I personally did not find DS very good at communications. I asked a couple of questions about other products and never heard back (maybe a victim of their own success). But they did ship quickly.

thanks for the replys and options guys, and the DEALS!
I went with the XDP kit, and ordered the blue spring kit while I was there....NO discount on that item though...guessing because its a Ford OEM part.

You can buy the filter head, valves & newer stainless steel bracket from DS. Order the hoses from Performance Machine. It will end up costing you more that way.

I ended up with the XDP kit. Best bang for the buck.

An amazing thing about these coolent filters is how much junk they catch.
I flushed and flushed and flushed till the water ran clear......used the chemical flush (XP9 or something like that)......flushed and flushed again, and within a few thousand miles the coolent filter was loaded up with slimly black junk. I don't know where it comes from, but theres a lot of it in the system.
I changed the coolent filter every 5000 miles and finally after about the 5th change, it's starting to clear up. The filters actually look pretty good at 5000 miles now.
I guess all that junk is what ends up plugging the oil cooler if you don't have a coolent filter !

Just a warning... are you experiencing the Water Temp and Engine Oil Temp deltas of greater than 15 degrees? If not, you DO NOT want to use Restore Plus... No need to risk a chemical flush from everything I have researched here or you might be replacing the Oil Cooler sooner rather than later.

The experts will correct me if I am wrong, but I bought the same stuff (Actually Restore and Restore Plus) and it's still sitting on my shelf because I'm not using it.

15* well, 15*ish. If he's committed to changing to oil cooler for whatever reason, rock and roll with the chemicals.
