Quick question for you guys and gals. I bought a replacement cowl from LMC Trucks and it has a cut out section at the bottom facing the front. Looks like it would be an access area for a bolt or something. The orginal cowl didn't have this opening and I'm wondering what this is for and should I close this hole so it's like the original? Here is a link to the part I have on LMC's site. It's part number 1.
Sounds like the opening on my 56. I think it's an access port for the front cab to frame mounting bolts, but I've never really looked into it other than to locate the plates that go over it.
I've just finished making stainless covers for mine. There is a wing bolt that goes up inside there. It's also a decent mud trap, so I'd like the option of being able to get in there and keep it clean.
The triangular hole and cover was stock on the 56. There is a bolt in there, and yes it if a dirt catcher I plan on putting a thin rubber or silicone gasket sealer gasket behind the cover plate.

I went with 1.2mm stainless sheet, held in with 6 M5 stainless bolts, into epoxy encapsulated riv-nuts, with a self adhesive closed cell foam gasket.
Probably right about it being for the 56 because my 54 doesn't have thataccess hole. I haven't had the front end on or together for years so I reallydon't remember how the hole would be covered if at all. The only bolt inthat area is the cab mount bolt which is accessible from the inside. Is there any reason on the 54 that I should keep it accessible?
Since my 54 cowl doesn't have that should I just go ahead and weld it shut?

It's that "funny way" of speaking the British have . Wings are what they call fenders on the other side of the pond. In addition to wings, their vehicles wear "bonnets" over the engine, and the rear storage space is covered with a "boot"!
Yes, that's the bottom fender bolt access hole. If you've had to take the bolt out from the inside, you know why they added it in '56.
My '53 had made it's own access hole before I got it. It made taking that bolt out pretty easy. My buddy's '56 came with them, but his were full of mud and had rusted his cab corner as badly as mine.
Oops, yep, fenders! Although we have petrol instead of gas, we can get 100 octane at the pump!
Seems keeping them open is the way to go, after these stories of decent corrosion....
Slant cabs (53-55) did not have access panels, they were added in 56. The lower cab corners in the front are notorious for rust-out due to the dirt and debris that collects in these corners. If you have the cut-outs in your new repair panels then keep them and cover them with the proper plates...they were put there for a good reason. If you open the access panels every so often and clean out the grunge so that the drains work properly then chances are that you will never see rust-out again in these corners. The drain is in the lower edge of the cab corner and it faces towards the rear near the rocker panel.
