Accelerator pedal - how does it come off?

Quick question.....I'm trying to put in sound deadener and a new floormat....can't figure out how the accelerator pedal comes out. 2 flathead screws at the bottom in back of the pedal..can't get a screwdriver on them. Top connection looks to be pressed into the bracket that passes through the firewall. I'm stumped.

You have to pull the rubber part of the pedal off of the rod that goes down through the floor first, then you can lay the pedal right back and get to the screws. There is a bolt head type of connection on the end of that rod that inserts into the back of the pedal.
