I have an 01 f-150 4.6 triton and it now blows a sometimes pretty big ploom of white smoke at start up. Sometimes it smokes for a while after that and sometimes not. It runs smooth and strong but I have no clue what to do...
HELP PLEASE...
That's my next check. ive been reading past threads and learning. I just got the damn thing and didn't happen on the test drive. and dosent happen all the time. I just went out and started it and it didn't happen... will get back on coolant loss soon. how long til I notice a loss???
Have some one else start it and smell the smoke. It's probably is oil but a sniff test will tell. Mine has done that for 5 or 6 years on start up....not every time, but enough that I notice it....oil leaks down into the cylinder(s) when it sits. It depends where I park it and the angle. I have 245,000 miles and it still runs fine. Make sure your PCV valve is good...easy to change and cheap. I have always used about a 1/4 of a quart of oil between changes (3000 miles) so it is not much.
ok by the way it has 80,000 miles on it.
upon further review it is smoking more now and has a hesitation-stumbling if I romp on it while driving and begins smoking and it actually seems to be more of a little bit of black smoke at first then a blueish white... im thinking more of a fuel problem but really don't know where to start.
It has a k&n filter but I havnt looked at the rest of the intake system yet.is the mass air flow sensor and the IAC somewhere I should start?
It really dosent smell from what I can tell but im in the cab.
I need some direction please. I can do most any work on it just need some starting points please. thank you in advance.
also when it does smoke at start up its a pretty big cloud of smoke. just wanted to throw that in there...
Well.....it could need a complete tune up. The IAC is probably Ok, clean the air filter and get some MAF cleaner and spray that down while you have the filter off. Start basic....clean gas with maybe 1-2oz. of Seafoam in the gas tank per gallon of gas...then go from there.
Well its lookin like a head gasket... BOOOOOOOO!!!!
Its been spitting wet suit out of the tail pipe, no smell and the smoke is steam I figured by how fast it dissipates. I will know for sure tomorrow when the mechanic calls. Its a bigger job than I want to undertake and I would rather a pro do it. Wish me luck and thanks for the help.

so condensation never happened in the exhaust before??????
If it's coolant it usually stinks like....well....burning coolant, like when your heater core has a hole in it. I hope they are honest with you. A head on these is tedious($$$$) work. Anytime you have the cams above the head it makes it more complicated, not to mention how far under the firewall the motor sits. I have done them and never again, I think I would try some sealer in the radiator first and maybe get lucky. If they do pull the head INSIST they remove all eight exhaust studs and put in the SS ones while the head is on the bench. That's another fine job you would rather avoid down the road.
well just heard from the mechanic and its not a gasket. he says its oil smoke and there is no blow by from the rings so he is leaning twords maybe a valve seal is completely gone or multiple seals leaking. That is way better than a head gasket... will keep you updated. thanks again for the help and interest in my problem...
Keep in mind if the smoke is very white in color it's not oil.
Oil will combust and show a blue/black color as carbon.
Antifreeze will tend to be whitish as steam because it does not burn but only changes 'phase'.
Both have to pass through the cats and may cool them.
Good luck either way.
Just got my baby back. it turns out the k&n was so plugged it was sucking oil through the pcv and burning it... truck runs like a raped ape and no smoke!!! WOOOHOOO!!!!!!!
Thank you all for your opinions and help. Now im hitting the trails for a few days!!!
LOL...That is PLUGGED!! Glad that's all it is. Remember to clean that with the kit you can buy that includes cleaner and new oil that you spray on. Maybe the last guy believed the BS about how the dirtier they get the better they work..I would pull the ductwork and clean the MAF and also clean the throttle body. They make cleaners specific to do that ( especially the throttle body). That oil can really make a mess if not applied correctly.
Yes I did the filter and maf. the throttle body, butterfly and so on is next. Im so happy I didn't run into a huge bill and the time it would take to do it.
He also said he thinks the motor had been tore down before because the heads look like they have been hot tanked and the whole motor is very clean. The ****ty dealer I bought it from didn't even detail it so I know they didn't clean under the hood cuz it was full of spider webs. good thing I live in the desrt and we don't have roving gangs of rats or it probly woulda been full of them also.
