my truck has been using some oil, about 1 quart per 1000 miles, has heavy smoke on start up, also if im slowing down at high rpm's and just barely put my foot back on the gas pedal it will puff out some pretty good blush white smoke. there is no oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil. does this sound like eather ipr or injector o-rings?
If the injector orings have never been changed out, I would change them for good measure. Aslo do a compression check while you are in the valve covers if you have access to one.
YouTube - powerstroke smoke problem also the longer it sits the harder it is to start my truck has been sitting for probably 3 days before i started it for this video. i should ad there is no hesitation in the truck starting after only sitting overnight if it sits for a few days it doesn't really want to start, outside temp at the time of this video was 61*f and i turned the key on right before turning the camera on
A gasser gauge won't work. They usually only read to 300psi while the powerstroke should be close to 400psi. You also need a special adapter that fits in the glow plug hole.
I still think its the orings or injector washer. If it gets worse the longer it sits, the oil would have more time to leak past the injector cup/copper washer and into the cylinder. It could be the valve guides like stated above but the orings are a common problem on the early powerstrokes.
Definitely O rings and maybe some glow plug issues as well
When the truck is warmed up next time put it in neutral and mash the fuel pedal to the floor it should rev smooth all the way to the limiter if the o rings are bad it will kinda sputter and puff blue white smoke at around 2000 RPM

i tested that today after you and mentioned it and it did exactly as you described. i also suspect a bad glow plug or two but it wont be to much work to take care of both issues at the same time if its injector o-rings. I suspect that the injector o-rings are special o rings? not just a standard o-ring? where are is a good place to get some quality injector o-rings
ebay is also the best I've found. Also, if funds permit and you are good mechanically, have a look at http://www.diy-injectors.com. For $250 you can go ahead and rebuild them while you have them out and the kit comes with the orings. This is what I plan on doing in the near future.
dang you! lol you just had to mention that didn't you i wasn't even thinking of that but now i am seriously considering diy stage 1 injectors. a couple of questions though, how much does an average machine shop charge to modify the Intensifier piston? I have a mechine shop that has done some head work and stuff for me on other projects that i could probably have do that, or what is the cost of getting the ones from diy i did not see that in the price lists? with my understanding is that stage 1's run just like stock injectors with stock tuning so i wouldent have to run out and buy a tw or dp tuner (its in my plans but the cost of the diy's combined with a custom chip at the same time would probably be outta the budget. if the stage 1's will run fine with my superchips (even with no extra power gain) i would be happy with that till i can get a custom chip.
wait i just noticed it how could i have missed that. $225 ouch i will have to check with my machine shop i really need to get this taken care of before snow fly's that is probably only 2-3 weeks away here. especially if my truck might be down for a few days meaning i have to do it at home instead of in our shop at work because i cant leave my truck parked in there for more than a day two tops. a additional $225 on top of the 250 for the stage 1 kit would probably put this out of the budget seems how i need new batterys and probably a couple glow plugs before we start getting below 0 out. i want to do this for a couple reasons 1 an injector rebiuld cant hurt anything at 230k miles and 2 id love to have some bigger injectors in there.
At 230k miles your injectors are definitely due for an overhaul. The DIY Kit will get you in to inspect the parts, too, to see if you have anything worn and need replaced (very likely). You will also take some measurements to see how badly worn your injectors are and if they need machining (very likely).
The Pistons are $225 because I have to have them manufactured and it's not cheap. I have been told some shops charge between $50 and $100 to do this IF you can find someone to do it.
Also, if you buy the Pistons ahead of time, you can do the injectors one at a time, so if you mess up and get confused, you can crack open another one and have a look. If you have a shop do them, you have to take ALL 8 of the injectors apart, keeping all the parts for each injector together, then wait for the shop, then put them all back together.
Just some things to think about.
To the OP, I bet just external o-rings and new glow plugs and GP relay will get you set-up. Watch working on the gp's though, if they have never been out, I bet you'll find some carboned up and frozen in there. I changed mine at 60k miles and 2 of them were stuck. It'll take DAYS of soaking them with penetrating oil to get them out.
Or you could just remove the head...
Thanks DZL JIM. Even with new pistons and a few parts kits the rebuild would still cost about the same as only 2 new injectors.
I printed out the page below and took it to my machine shop. He told me he would do it for $40. I get a good bit done there so he might have been cutting me a deal. He also hasn't seen the detailed instructions since I haven't ordered the kit yet so he may change his mind.
if my machine shop will machine my pistons for $50-$100 that puts doing this back into the realm of reality. i suppose if i had to i could drag my truck in and outta the shop with the forklift to work on it. i could use some plastic trays to keep all of the parts organized. I'm really not all that worried about my ability to do the job, ill just probably be getting the parts pack as well seems how my fingers can be a bit clumsy....lol what other parts might need to be machined due to wear? i would like to run it buy my mechine shop guy to know worst case senerio before i commit to rebiulding the injectors. worst case i will just install new o-rings and glow plugs and do the injectors at a later date, atleast at that point ill be a little faster at removing the injectors...lol
DZL JIM do you sell just injector o-rings by themselves as well, if you do i would rather buy from you than some joe on ebay. if i decide to do the injectors at a later date.
