driveline question
i am new to posting, i have been trying to research threads on the two piece vs single driveshafts. i have a 03 f250 6.0 extended cab with the long bed. took it to ford today, they told me it needs new u-joints across the board and of course a wonderful price of $650 for parts and labor. i remember having a shaft made for my 56 f100 for about $150. so i am wondering if a straight driveshaft is possible to put on my p/up. at this point when i called about the 2 shaft setup spicer u-joints are $37 each plus $17 installation plus tax and possibly the other coupler roughly $60.... can someone give me some direction on which way you guys have gone.... any and all help is greatly appreciated! thanks
If you have the ability, CHOCK THE WHEELS, mark the way it sits and remove the driveshaft. The real PITA is the carrier bearing. You can take it anywhere to have the u-joints and carrier bearing replace and reinstall yourself to save money. You can also grease the slip joint while you have it out.
Lubricant Ford Motorcraft XG-8 is the best.
It seems thin but it works. Also I was told by a parts
person to use the non grease-able joints for the diesel.
The reason was that they are stronger. No drilling to start
a crack from.
One thing I found that made the R&R easier was my balljoint press.
Mine were really in there and the press helped to get them out.
