AC Compressor questions

On my 2001 Excursion the ac clutch went south over the weekend. I replaced the clutch with a factory cluth kit. Now the problems are baffling me.

I set the air gap at .020. The problem being when I turn the ignition switch on and turn on the ac switch the clutch does not engage. I still get cold air. When I start the truck and it runs the clutch is enaged without any problems, I turn it off and the clutch disengages.

I have done a thorough search and been unable to find any reference to this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It sounds like it's working normally. The AC clutch will not engage unless the engine is running.

Okay thanks. Maybe I just misunderstood what was explained to me, and seen in other posts, about turning the ac on and the ignittion on to lock the clutch down to undo the bolt. Maybe I over thought the whole process. Thanks.

Turning on the ign and AC to lock the clutch worked til some time in the late 80s to early 90s. That changed as the compressor circuit operation became more integrated with the engine controls.

Thanks that clears it up. Guess I am fine. Way to many years out of the loop.
