Is the 10m band active these days? Back in the 70's it was becoming quite a free-for-all!

Yep. It's up and down with the sunspot cycle as always.

UPDATE: I have decided it aint gonna work. I have a Peragon cover, so I can put an antenna in the bed or in a stake hole. I don't really want to put anything on the roof because I live in a city with lots of old trees that hang over the steet and I would just rip a roof mount off. So, due to inability to mount an antenna I have decided to forget the whole thing.

Sorry to hear that. Have you considered some of these options for the antenna?

Amazon.com: FireStik SS-204A Adjustable stainless steel vertical door jamb mount: Electronics Amazon.com: FireStik SS-204A Adjustable stainless steel vertical door jamb mount: Electronics

CB Replacement AM FM ANTENNA - 1980 thru 2014 Ford F150 : Amazon.com : Automotive CB Replacement AM FM ANTENNA - 1980 thru 2014 Ford F150 : Amazon.com : Automotive

Amazon.com: Firestik SS-174 Stainless Steel Hood/Trunk Channel Mount: Car Electronics Amazon.com: Firestik SS-174 Stainless Steel Hood/Trunk Channel Mount: Car Electronics

If i were to do it again i'd either use the replacement antenna or the hood channel mount. Just some ideas i thought i'd share.

Door jamb mount might work, although the ratings seem to indicate that one flexes around alot.

sorry, didn't read the reviews on that one. I wonder if adding a spring at the base would fix the flexing, hopefully without it hitting the truck, or possibly make it worse. I kind of wish i had put one at the base of mine. there have been a few times i needed to put the truck in the garage and almost ripped the stake pocket out due to the antenna hitting the house.

always put a spring on a fiber glass antenna, it keeps it from stress fractures and saves the house door jamb.
