My 2003 F250 stalled when I was pulling up to the fuel pump. I had a half tank, was just topping off. Truck would not restart I felt fuel pump its running, removed filter, it's empty. Any suggestions?
No but to find out if that's the problem you can blow pressurized air into the fuel tank by disconnecting the fuel line on the back of the fuel pump. Don't forget to open the fuel door so the air has a place to go. It seems like I've been recommending this a lot lately.
It's unlikely that the screens are so clogged that its bog allowing any fuel to get threw. There are normally earlier signs. Like no power or the truck won't come off an idle and if it does no power. Any of these signs ring a bell?
EDIT: no easy way to fix the problem for good unless you drop the tank.
When a truck just dies like that with no prior symptoms, it is usually electrical in my experience. Check the fuses. Especially the one for the fuel bowl heater/PCM.
The only thing that is messing me up is that when you cycle the key the pump comes on and then goes off like its built pressure. I took the filter out ant cycled the key and there is no fuel. I might be wrong but I would figure it would pump fuel. If the heater fuse is blown would that cause it to not let fuel enter the filter housing?
I re-read your first post. The pump is running, the bowl is empty and there isn't a bunch of fuel on the ground or coming off the back of the block? If the pump is running, it has to be going somewhere other than the bowl.
Pull the line off the front of the pump. cycle the key and see if the pump is pulling fuel from the tank. Don't let it run for more than a second or two...there should be a puddle under the truck. If not, you have bad pump, broken pickup assembly in the tank or super clogged screens in the tank (I think). Has the hutch mod been done on your truck? It may be time, and it isn't hard.
No fuel on the ground, no overfilling of engine oil like fuel is going that way. I haven't figured out how, but my thoughts are either. THe pump is just running and not pumping or the pick up tube is broke. Just don't understand why the pump shuts off like its pressurized. Then again I don't know if its a pressure shut off or timer.
Good luck. Why not get a couple more gallons in the tank to see if it pumps then? If it does you know you have to drop the tank. If it doesn't do what I said with the pressurized air to blow the screens out. If it still doesn't work the pump may be bad. How confident are you that your fuel gauge is correct?
I'd get some fuel in a can & a piece of 5/16" hose & hook the hose on the pick-up side of the pump to see if it picks up the fuel out of the can before I started with the tank
