I need a bit more practice and a better clutch lol but this is my first pull with the freshened up 390. A coulpe problems, who sells a good 11 inch clutch for these trucks? My 10 inch napa clutch doesnt want to hold off the line. Also how are you keeping your trucks cool? While waiting in line a had hit 240, and while crusing it only cruises at about 195-200. Should i upgrade to an aluminum radiater and electric fan first? Feel free to give constructive criticism, im just a rookie puller lol 76 Ford 390 truck pull - YouTube
thats sweet man, i can see your frame tweeking though. now i dont know much about pulling but id imagine frame bendage isnt a good thing. i like seeing the gas trucks getting it done, everyone and there mother has diesels
They all do that. My shortbox was tweakin too. 20" hitch?? Haven't seen a Ford snap yet. Well I guess I did snap the pilot casting in my 9" all in a day's play
On the cooling... hot while waiting in line but cool on a roll suggests airflow problems. First on the list would be a good fan and matching shroud. What are you starting with? The factory cooling package is normally OK at holding temp at idle. A bigger radiator helps but I'd look into fan and shroud first.
What do you do in a pull with the granny 4 speed in a truck like this? Start out in second, slip the cutch and let her rip? What is considered good/Bad/decent in a pull for a truck like this? Awesome Videos by the way!
Its all up to the guy on the sled. He can set the sled to stop you at 200 or 290 or whatever. He sets it for a class, and maintains it for that class. Its more a contest against the other guy. Track conditions are crucial and groundspeed is the key. I pulled in granny 3rd with a stock replacement 11" BTW.
