tracking down what is wrong

Hi.. I have really enjoyed this forum over the last 4 years and used alot of the tips and advise offered. I have an 1983 4x4 351w 2bl swapped to a 1986 with edelbrock 1406 4bl. I have had all the normal problems.... Lights going out on high beam.. hard to start when hot.... tilt steering. solenoid going bad and having to smack the thing to stop cranking etc.. but the one that has baffled me to date is the hard start when hot.. I am a prefectionist i guess and cheap as the day is long. I have tried to fix the hard start when hot problem by; replacing starter, battery, solenoid, cables, wrapping the exhaust, heat shiedling the starter, replacing all cables.... but.... i think the problem is boiling the gas out of the edelbrock 1406. I had dismissed this early on as a crazy idea that couldn't be... but after thought I have replaced the blocked EGR with a edelbrock aluminum spacer and put a good thick gasket between the spacer and the stock manifold and thin (because it was the only thing that would fit) between the carb and the spacer. After looking at the EGR spacer being hollow underneath I think thats a sign... Anyway, I love the truck but hate the engineering that makes it difficult to get "right".
