"Its an auto just drive it" Ok that's out of the way.
What I have is an "96" F800 with the 8.3 cummins and the mt653 Allison.
The issue is power,, the trans makes its final shift at 45 mph when accelerating, when pulling a hill it wont downshift out of 5th til 35 mph.
My last truck was an "05" duramax with the Allison and it basicly shifted like a car,,, I'm not expecting that type of performance, but I think it should downshift around 45 instead of 35 when pulling hard.
So for those of you with the Allison, how does yours shift.
You can adjust the kickdown, but factory setup is about like yours. I have been driving with them for a long while. You certainly can manually shift it when you hit a hill like that. The other option is to crank up the pump, and it wont bog down on the hills so bad.
I was wanting to crank it up, but I was concerned with how much the Allison could safely stand. Finding info on this setup has been difficult .
What I know is its a 210 hp 8.3 cummins but I find no info on the torque output.
The transmission is a MT653 Allison and I have found nothing on the stock torque handling capabilities.
I have read the low buck article and understand the process to slide the plate forward, but before I do that, how much will my Allison stand? How much heat will I build in the exhaust? How much actual power will this gain?
The 653 is rated at 250hp/850tq, but thats at 80k pounds. It will take much more, I assure you. A 210hp 6CT is roughly 650tq. Sliding the plate will get it to about 280/875. Added EGT is hard to guess due to many factors(engine condition, exhaust size and muffler setup, intake restrictions). You can get away with it on an empty truck in city driving, but you must have a pyro when loaded or any hills.
Then again, adding marine injectors and a bigger turbo will make a crazy 500hp monster out of it....but thats for manual transmissions only.
One thing you DON'T want to do w/a 653 is full power up shifts from 1st to 2nd. 1st is a creeper gear for off road and real slow going, has a auxillary planet assembly bolted to the back of the case.
