Had the check engine like come on and go off in my 08 King Ranch (157k miles) twice in the past 3 weeks. Well since I have yet to to buy a AE to run my own codes, I took it to the dealership to get the codes read to find out the problem. Well once I got what I needed, and they told me the price of it, I did a quick search here to see if its possible to change with the cab on. Well with just glimpsing over a few post it seems that it is possible, so on to the questions.
1. Where can I buy an EGR?
2. Should I only use OEM?
3. Is there any type of delete for this? And what else is needed?
Any other input would be nice if anyone wished to share some tricks, cheats, what ever you want to call them.
Lets add another question since I just got off the phone with the dealership.
Is there a special tool thats needed to change the EGR? There telling me there is to pull the bottom connection off and out of the housing.
But talking to 2 different shops, I got 2 different quotes. 15 miles to my west they said 650 parts and labor. 15 miles east said 405 parts and labor. Quite a bit of difference for 30 miles.
looking at a napa egr valve we would prob charge almost $400 through my work shop. book time shows 1 hour at our shop rate of $60 per hour.
i have seen this on egr fixes tho...
4. If the EGR valve will not come out of its bore, the housing it is bolted to can be easily removed with the valve, then you will be able to look into the housing and see if the valve is coked heavily with black carbon, keeping it from pulling out of the housing.
5. At that point you can try to use penetrant oil, and try to clean the debris away to get the valve out of its housing. If it still won't come out, the housing is approximately $90 dollars. It may be more cost effective to just replace the housing with the valve. Note the new valve may not have a port for the coolant hose, so that hose will now go straight to the cooler. This is a normal update.
the special tool is EGR Valve puller 303-1267 and looks like it goes for $450-$650. but if i was to guess if you replace the whole housing you would not need the tool?
There are several EGR deletes($150-350). But you will have to put on a programer ($1300-1600) other wise you will get a wrench and go into limp mode. You can then get rid of the DPF and its oil making regn process.
