Getting ready to run the wire for the horn button on my '50 F2. Steering column is stock and the entire button assembly/wire was missing when I got it.

Where/how does the wire exit at the bottom of the steering column? Haven't found any diagrams that show that.

Wire goes down the center of the steering column and out the bottom. You'll want to clean up the end of the column to find the exit. The wire then typically joins the wire bundle. Van Pelt has diagrams http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/F...48-50truck.jpg

Here ya go. This doesn't look like I remember, I thought it went to the bundle going to the dimmer switch.

 

Mine had no horn wire in the column when I got it. I was trying to feed the wire through the column to the hole in the bottom of the steering box, but something was in the way. Turns out it was the contact from the end of the original horn wire. Someone had merely pulled out the old wire through the bottom.

I used my shop vac to suck it out the top. After that, the wire threaded through the hole easily.

 

OK, that's what I was trying to figure out. The wire goes down the center of the steering column, straight thru the steering box and exits on the back/bottom side.

Glad I found this thread.....Now I know what is jammed inside the lower shaft.
It's really uncooperative...I have every tool in the garage engaged in this military action.
Next step......mini-drones.... then explosives.....

If the hole is plugged, just stick an awl or icepick in there to unplug it. Then use a shop vac to pull the debris out through the top of the column. At least that worked for me, and I didn't have to resort to explosives...

 

Perhaps air pressure from the bottom to remove debris such as pieces of wire and or electrical contacts. Probably even work for mud daubers.

 

A length of TIG welding rod or "piano" wire from a hobby shop (is spring steel and comes in 3' lengths and various diameters) fed up from the bottom should clear any obstructions.

 

The lower 4 - 5 inches is part of the steering box end cap. Worse come to worse, just take that off. The tube that is part of that slides into the steering shaft bore. When feeding the wire from the top, the bullet connection will hang up on the lip of the lower tube, can be frustrating to get it to feed into the lower part.

 

I ran a wire up through the bottom, soldered the end of my new wire to that, and pulled it back down through the hole in the bottom.

 

I need to do the same to my 48. Is the truck supposed to have a horn relay? Where would that get mounted?

 

Ford didn't use no steeenkin relays!

 

The horn relay is just to the left of the starter solenoid, on the firewall.

 

Not sure about on the V8, but mine is mounted on the firewall close to the passenger side hood spring.
