Not being one to disagree, but having restored a 1981 F100 and crawled over countless carcasses, VIN code G. 351.

IIRC there were even 400's and 460s, but it was offshore only.

I sold the ford chassis manual to Brad when he got the truck, but it also spoke of such beings. (the only US one I never encountered was vin code D)

that all being said, 2 runs on metal prices and a misguided CFC programme have left most of these currently in chinese bridge steel. so you have to use my #1 maxim for ford: if it bolts, it fits. screw the parts catalogs.

If you beef this up, your life is easier if it came with 5 on 5.5 wheels and manual brakes (common) or the HD power brakes (rare in the F100) the front end parts in this case share a bit with the F350 hence you can abuse them a bit more.

To answer the original question that started the thread; 351c's came from the factory with c4's behind them. Your tranny should be ok behind the 351c. I do know some of the c4's behind the smaller sixes(like the 250's that came in cars) had less clutch discs in the tranny. I was told this when I used one behind a 302 in my 65 mustang. But it's been in there for years and has been a good tranny for me. Being your c4 is in a truck and was behind a big 300 six, it might have the same clutches as a v8 tranny.

Which specific 1970/74 Ford/Merc's with 351C's would those be, since most 351C's came with FMX's or C6's?

If you look in the Ford & L/M parts catalogs, there is no 351C listed with a C4, not a one.

But that's misleading, as in most cases, the only listing is just plain 'ol 351, which could be a 351C or a 351W (intro'd in 1969).

You got me on that one. The 351c I bought for my 53 f100 had a c4 behind it, but I bought it sitting in the yard under a tarp, not in a car that I could see. It looked all original to me, seeing the linkage and everything was there, but maybe not.

Some of the Torinos had a 351C 2v with a C-4 trans. A buddy has a couple that were factory that way.....

Just because a book says it, doesn't mean it's true.

What I said was...is that the Ford & L/M car parts catalogs usually do not define a 351C from a 351W inre to A/T applications.

For an example, look at this trans application chart. Are these 1974 Torino's equipped with 351C 2V's or 351W 2V's?

I get what you're saying. In the A(Ford) section there is no suffix to tell them apart. In the Torino section, there is a 351W listed and the rest are either 2B or 4B, which I am taking as the 2V and 4V clevelands, but who really knows.

I "C" the issue of Cleveland, modified, Windsor is a touchy one.
I wanted the Cleveland for pulling power. I do not race or treat my stuff badly.
I have parts for my 300 to "hop" it up, but was wondering about putting the Cleveland in just because you don't see that.
and also the concern of finding parts on not so popular of an engine, the Cleveland that is.

I don't know about the Cleveland/M/Windsor being a "touchy" subject. It's more Ford's fault making it so confusing and everyone gets all mixed up.

If you are going to go up in cid, then try to pick a engine that these trucks came with. You can then go to the parts store, the junkyard, etc. and find parts that are made for your application. You can put a 351c in your truck, but it will be a constant thing when getting parts. A non-stock engine can be used, it's just a little bit more trouble in the long run.

There are lots of parts for the Cleveland, and many of them will go on a 351M/400 - both of which came in these trucks. So, if you want to go down the road less traveled, come along w/me.
