Hey, I'm looking at Ford F150 Supercrew to replace my Plymouth Voyager minivan (that I had to replace the tranny on at 52k miles despite changing the oil/filter on it as prescribed). Couple o' questions here:
Is it worthwhile to wait for the 2004's to come out? I like the 03 models, but they haven't found my color choices yet. How much more expensive do you think they'll be? I'm dickering on a $32k XLT model. They're giving me the rebate ($2500), plus $6400 for our minivan (79k miles, excellent cond. despite being a Chrysler), I'm putting $3k down and financing the rest (~$22k after taxes, tags). Can I do better?
I looked at the Chevy Silverado, but thought the styling looked "flat". The F150 beats it hands down here. Chevy is stickered higher, but they seem more willing to come down in price.
Also, anyone have troubles with the tranny on the F150s? Other major gotchas I should know about?
Pattherat: How much are they taking off the sticker?? (Before the rebate, trade, ect.) There should be quite a bit of movement in that area, especially on a 2003?
You will no doubt get a better deal on a 2003!!
According to Edmunds, my van in excellent condition would be worth $2934 with options and mileage figured in for a trade on a new truck. So let's say it's worth $3k. They're giving me $6400 for it (Edmunds says they'd sell it for $4400). So I'm thinking they're giving me $3k for the van and knocking $3400 off the sticker, right?
Make em' talk REAL money to ya. They're playing the trade to make you feel better about buying from them.
See the invoice, you should be paying no more than $500 over it.
Now, subtract the trade, that is, subtract the $$$ they're going to sell it for. So, even though your van is worth $3g (I'm assuming thats private sale) to you, it's only worth about a grand to them.
Now, you should have an idea of how much you ought to be able to get it for. If they wont work with you, or get close to this for ya, remember, there's always another dealer, and another deal.
Any deal they will make "today only", will still be good tomorrow if they want to get their numbers in for the month.
PatTheRat: I went and munched the figures and that (23k) is not a bad figure with your trade. There might be a little movement +/-
but I would be happy with that price! Are they giving you a good interest rate, if so, why put your money down, keep it in the bank or use for upgrades! Use their money when possible!!
i like the 04's so don't get me wrong but the 03's are really!! good lookin truck's i have had mine (03 larait fx4 white/silver) 2 mounths an i love it in every way. i havent heard of any tranny problem's ether so good luck
The '04's have a more rigid frame, and hopefully they will hold up better in crash tests than the '97-'03 F150's... I like the general looks of the '03 F150 body, they should be dealing on these in August when the '04's start showing up on lots.....
Okay, to further muddle issues, I test drove a Lariat stickered at $37,220. My wife loved it (me too). It's really optioned out (power moonroof, leather, seat heat, power rear window, etc). Dealer says $29,600 after trade/tags/taxes. How's this sound? I'd have to come up with a much bigger down payment than I'd anticipated, so I don't know if we'll do it. Maybe if I can get him down a bit more. Is the rebate $2500 or did it just go up to $3k?
Pat the Rat: Is that $29,600.00 before the rebate, if I read it right!! With the rebate that would put you around $26K-$27K,so thats $10,000.00 off as in previous deal!! Not bad!! I guess the decision is, how big of a payment do you want??
If its $29600.00 with the rebate included in deal, then its a BAD deal!!
It's only money,
Lenny

PattheRat: You are getting that trade ripoff down pat, how they show so much money in the trade!! Anyway if you could get that truck out the door for $27,500 +/- (not much on the plus side) you are getting a pretty good deal! Look around a little bit, FYI,another ford dealer can dealer trade for that truck, Your only $2K apart right now, Thats not much!
Just had the other dealer offer me a truck that's stickered with $2k less options ($35k) and he wanted the same price as the other dealer that had leather and more. Told him flat out "no" and left. That's actually the same combined dealership where I bought the van in the first place. You think they'd make me a deal. Ha!
