BREAKDOWN today
Our safety recall requirements for vehicles are typically no where near as stringent as those in the USA - this is a good example, if an engine dies, it is considered a safety issue with grounds for a recall by the NHTSA in the states... it typically isn't in Aus.
However, whenever a manufacturer does a recall in another country on a vehicle, they will typically recall them worldwide for PR reasons, I am guessing that because only 99-03 models in the states were affected, so that was all that got recalled here... it doesn't mean that the issue is fixed in later model years that were sold here (I know they didn't fix the issue till 2008 or so?), so if you have a truck that didn't have a recall done on it, you will probably want to carry a new CPS and socket with you.
Had same issue with FA. Asked during recall to get a CPS.
FA said mine was not one of the effected models being off the production line in November 2005 and cross referenced with the VIN# (to believe or not to believe
.I said give me one to carry as a spare because they are a known failure point
. You guessed it .. nooo sir
.So via that good fella Clay I got 2 of them on one of my shipments.
Touch wood I haven't had an issue to date, but carrying them is good peace of mind.
Cheers,
Reg
I've also ordered 2 other brands, Borg Warner, and CMP, so I can compare 3 different types.
During the week I've also started my truck up a couple of times. Fires up straight away and runs perfectly, no CPS DTC (P0340, P0344). You wouldn't believe the truck was a full-stop breakdown and tow home last w/e. The way it starts up now I'm really tempted to start using it again, but the breakdown is playing on my mind. I won't take it out of the garage until I've replaced to CPS, and even then I will have TWO spares in the truck just in case one of the new ones is a dud.
So far I've seen Motorcraft, Borg Warner, CMP, & Airtex branded replacements, the different colours, and the other difference is some of the sensors retain the same diameter through the o-ring, while others have a smaller diameter after the o-ring.
I've have a play around with a magnet and multimeter when I receive the sensors and try to make some sort of informed decision about which one to try.

experience I ordered a spare.
I have bought a Delphi branded unit that sounded like
it was good.
I will let you know what it's like when it arrives.
Lessons learned for me:
1) carry a spare CPS and have a idea how to fit it;
2) carry a 10mm socket & 100mm extension as truck tools (I already did);
3) carry a 1/2 drive breaker bar and know how to remove the serpentine belt;
4) it takes 12 minutes to replace a CPS (including unhooking the serpentine belt before, & refitting it after).
The CPS that came out of my truck was black. The BW units are grey. They could have came out of the same factory/machine/build process as the molding marks, machine marks, etc, are all virtually identical. All units I have (old & new) are the 'large end' variety. The plastic on the end face of the unit seems thin (i.e. not the el-cheapo thick plastic that I've read some postings about), and the end magnets seem equally strong.
The truck started up as usual with the new unit, it may be idling smoother, barely perceptable, but that might just be in my mind.
Got the Motorcraft unit from Clay today. $120 cheaper than buying it from the dealer, but a 17 day wait. The Motorcraft unit is the dark-blue variety with the smaller diameter end.
Hauling horse-flesh on the w/e, I'll report back if there are any issues.
A couple of times under full load/boost, generally going uphill under WOT in the passing lane, the truck would give a single cough - like a miss-fire.
I've now swapped the BW CPS out and put the Motorcraft CPS in to see if the cough dissappears.

If you haven't got a spare CPS order the Motorcraft one from Clay today!
And slipping off the serpentine belts makes access a breeze too.
Anyway, the tow beat 60mins lying in the rain....
When my CPS died, I noticed about a week before my truck took a little bit longer to start, not by much
Did you notice the same thing

Just trying to figure out if there any warnings if the CPS is on the way out
Did some research & figured it was the CPS - forum concencus was they die but you usually get a start again. Went to the garage 2 days after the breakdown and cranked it over and it started straight away as if nothing had happened.
Never noticed a delayed start prior to the failure, and once completely cooled it started fine after the failure. Just the odd miss two times before it died.
