Hutch Mod Help

I am installing the Hutch Mod using the Strictly Diesel Kit. I am 1/4" too long on the Fuel Screen Pickup. I thought I would be able to shorten it enough when I tightened the compression fitting. No such luck! Is this going to be a problem or am I OK??? Really don't want to try cutting the compression fitting off?? I appreciate any input.

Thanks,
Jim

Do you mean the pick up foot is hitting the bottom of the tank? Push the foot up a little or pull it off and cut that end of the tubing. Or am I not understanding what you mean? The tubing is usually only 4" long.
Jim.

Do you mean to say that the total length of the pickup assembly is 1/4" too long? If so, you won't be able to screw on the assembly properly. I say buy another compression fitting and measure thoroughly before tightening it all up.

The total length is 1/4"' too long and is bottoming out in the tank. How far should the foot be off the bottom of the tank? Any suggestions on how to remove the compression fitting?? I was thinking hacksaw or dremel tool??
Also noticed the rubber in my carrier bearing is cracked. Should the driveshaft be able to be moved side to side and up and down in a good carrier bearing?
Thanks for the help.

I presume you didn't take a measurement of the pick up assembly when you first took it out? That's how you determine the overall finished length of the modified pick up assembly. I would venture to guess, (and hopefully someone will chime in if this is incorrect), that the pick up umbrella would need to be about 1/8" off the bottom to clear any flexing or expansion/contaction of the fuel tank. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want full contact on the bottom as that could bugger up the fuel pick up if it flexed enough.

I took the measurement as called out in the installation but ended up being 1/4" too long. so tomorrow I will cut and adjust to make it fit. Any suggestions on the carrier bearing??

the rubber insulator on the carrier bearing will shrink up over time.the question is how much is to much.most people dont pay any attention to them until there having drivability problems.mine was moving around some with no problems ,but changed it while doing Ujoints.

The foot is rippled along the edges all the way around to let fluid get under the foot. It should touch on the bottom when the retaining ring is screwed down. It is soft, so you have a tiny bit of room for flexion. Just pull the assembly out, take the foot off, cut 1/4 inch off the tubing and put the foot back on. I just put this kit on my rig. My pickup foot had disintegrated into a bunch of little pieces, so I couldn't measure it. Had to make two cuts on that tube to get it just right. Working great and the pump can get ALL the fuel out of the tank if needed.

Did the necessary cutting. Works great!! Quieted the cackle a lot. Truck runs great.

Weird issue. Noticed radiator leak on passenger side with fuel system disconnected - one drop every couple of minutes, Did leak check of Hutch Mod - no leaks. Drove truck to station and filled tank. No coolant leaks and no rise in coolant temp.

Degas bottle level is about 1/4" below minimum. Put piece of clean cardboard underneath, No leaks so far. Will continue to monitor???

Thanks for the help,
Jim
