Vibration/Humming FIXED!!!

Hey guys ill try to keep this as short as possible! First off, thank you ALL for providing me with so much information to go on.. Posting on here is what i try to avoid because many people have asked the same questions and i didnt want to be redundant.

So, pretty much since I bought this truck two years ago I have been fighting this weird hummmmmm or vibration at 39-42mph and then it would do it again at 59-64mph. It was also "bed hopping" a little bit too. I have been scouring the forums to find a fix, but nobody really comes up with a solution.

I tried balancing tires numerous times with no success. So I said ok this truck has 300,000 plus miles on it so its time to start replacing stuff. To start i put all new calipers, rotors, brake pads, and parking brake pads all the way around. It cured a little bit of the vibration but not much.

Next I tried new Rancho 5000 shocks all the way around. Still didn't fix the problem, but helped a little bit more.

Then I started getting a flashing OD light, so into the tranny shop she went. She was fried and I got a nice new one put in. Multi disk torque converter and tow package makes it pull like a charm now, but it still didn't fix it. Actually now it was worse!

Next thing was off the the driveline shop for whole new drive line! Ujoints, carrier bearing, new slip yolk, and end shaft. They were nice enough to put a new boot on it too! I thought ok this should definitely fix it! NOPE, IT WAS EVEN WORSE!!!

Next on the list was a shim kit. My truck has 3" blocks in it, which I think are stock. Ordered the pro comp shims from Summit for $40 and installed 3/4 of an inch of shims. Made it a little better but still hummmmmm at 40 and 60!

So I started to look under the hood. Thinking maybe I had a blown boot, I pulled the drivers side intercooler pipe out and found that the fitting on the power steering pump was hitting the pipe!! Put a nice square dent in it but no hole. Went ahead and did the foil delete which sounds amazing and put it back in. Vibration still there but way better.

So I took the shaft back off that has the carrier bearing attached to it and back up to the driveline shop she went. I was thinking that maybe they welded the knuckle off by 45degrees that goes on the transfer case flange. Nope, they didn't so I said hey let's put a good neeapco carrier bearing on it instead of this factory style carrier. He says that that isn't going to fix the problem but I will do it for you and won't charge labor! I say ok do it! Took it home and installed it, crossed my fingers, and VIOLA!!! NO MORE VIBRATION AT ALLLLLL!!!!!!

I had to share this with you guys as a solution to the fix. I really think that everything I replaced did its part, but the higher quality carrier bearing did the trick I think. This problem has cost me many a sleepless night, but now I can sleep and my friends won't think I'm OCD anymore! Thanks for all the info guys!!!

Very true, but I didn't mind doing it because it all needed to be replaced anyhow. Trying to get in a few more posts so I can put a sig at the bottom to show my mods. I have done quite a bit to this truck. I think I'm finally ready for a new HPOP, single shots, custom tunes and a 38R!

You got PMS! Glad you got it fixed. I would of never thought of that after the new carrier beating you already installed.

Yes, I had JW put one on my truck when he did the full flush and it started doing that. He did put the jerk fitting in to. After I drove it for a while its back to normal. I guess the lube finely got to where it was suppost to be. Anyway yes to your question from my experience.

What's the part number and where'd you get it? I think mine is going out. I may try this....I wish I had the dough for a 1-piece drive shaft.

I'm not sure what the part number was, but the guy at the driveline shop said it was a Neapco carrier bearing for later model Ford trucks.

I think the clunk going into gear is lack of grease on the splines of the drive shaft. At least that was what it was on mine. So when you change it grease it good.
