Straight-up Timing Set - Which one?
I read somewhere that any EFI timing set will be a double roller, straight up set, that will work on my carbureted 1985 460. I saw the one with the 3 keyways, Cloyes part number C3079X, but I wanted to save some money since I only want straight up, and not advanced/retarded.
Others have said to use a set from a 1969-1971 Lincoln or some other vehicle that had the 429/460. But all the pictures on Rockauto depicted a single-roller chain for this version.
Back to the EFI style, I figured I couldn't go wrong with one from those years, but alas there is TWO different part numbers. One for 1988-1992 trucks, and another for 1993+. Both pictures looked identical, with the keyway directly underneath the peak of the tooth, supposedly to indicate straight up timing. I have no idea what the difference is between these two sets, does anyone know??
One part C3207 was for the 93+ trucks. The other part number, C3079 was for 88-92 models. Since Rockauto showed C3079X (the three keyway set) as fitting my 1985, I chose the C3079 set for the 1988-1992 trucks, since its part number was similar. I hope this was a correct assumption, but I'd really like to know the difference, and I suppose a confirmation from someone who has successfully used an EFI timing set in a carb'd truck that this will indeed work!
On a side note, I picked up a Motorcraft carb rebuild kit, plugs, timing set, a horde of gaskets (oil pan, timing cover, etc), master cylinder and some other odds and ends for around $200. I love shopping at Rockauto, but always end up with a bunch of stuff I don't need!
It is the 3 keyway true roller that fits 429/460.
There are a lot of people who use the stock Ford EFI chain.
Sorry, I don't know anything that changed in 1993.
