Have a long wheel base. Bed is rusted out where the bed floor meets the front panel up by the Cab. Where can I get repair panels to weld in. an can I get that support that runs under that spot on the bed? Thanks for any help give.
My 63 Short bed (not unibody) is also rusted out in the front bottom section. It uses the 59 style bed and I am having trouble finding any kind of panels for it. Anyone know of a vendor for these style of beds??
Thanks,
Jimmy
I have a short bed that is like the 59' bed since it is not a unibody. These trucks must be pretty rare since most of the 63's that I have seen on this site and anywhere else are either stepsides or unibody's.
I dropped mine off at a body man on Saturday. It is getting new floor pans, some small rust spots such as cab corners and such replaced/repaired. The bed is the worst of it. The sides are not real bac, but the bed bottom and the passenger side area where the tail light is needs major work. There are pic's in my gallery. It's a 63 CustomCab. It has 92,000 original miles and now sports an 84 351W/C6 with a 28 spline 3.50LS 9".
I had to make a repair panel for my 64's bed when I found out I couldn't buy one.
Here's a link to a drawing that you can use to make a panel. This will only fix the leading edge of the floor and the lower part of the bed front. It won't do you any good for the corrugated bed floor. For that you'll need either a decent donor panel, or replace the entire floor with a new panel. In looking for a "new" floor I found that an 80-86 8 foot bed floor was identical in size but the ribs are shaped different. That being said though, it is a tremendous amount of work to drill out all those spot welds and replace the whole floor.
I ended up just going with a flat floor and used 2 4x8' sheets of 1/8" steel.
Good luck, Phil
Hey Garbz2, I would REALLY like to see some pix of that! I wish I'd thought of that when I redid my bed. In hindsite, that might have been easier. Thanx, Phil
When I posted about this earlier, I completely forgot that yours is the 57-60 style bed. Sorry bout that. That pattern I was talking about wouldn't work for you at all. Hope I didn't mislead ya!
Nah, Pretty common mistake. It took 2 or 3 times to get the correct tail light lenses when I ordered them a couple of years ago. They sent the unibody ones first, then sent the correct round lenses with unibody gaskets!! Not even close. I don't even remember who I got them from now, but it wasn't any of our sponsors, I'm sure that they would have gotten it right the first time
Man, I saw the right bed that was a home made trailer. It looked ok from the road so I called and he said $150!!! But upon close inspection, it was rusted worse than mine. I was hoping the floor would be good, but it was worse than mine. Oh well, maybe one will come along someday.
