Vibration

I have a '70 F-100 with a C4 and a 9". It has developed (or has always had without my notice) a vibration at around 65mph (I do not drive the truck on the highway very often, which is how it would have escaped my notice until recently). The wheels are balanced, the driveshaft is balanced and has new u-joints and carrier bearing but the vibration persists. I feel it in the wheel but it also seems to shake the whole truck, I am going to have someone drive next to me and see if there is any obvious wobble. Other than that, any ideas where to look next? Perhaps a loose/worn component in the steering? Rear end? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Check these:
1. belt separation in one of the tires. (air pocket lump in tread or sidewall)
2. loose lug nuts
3. loose wheel bearings
4. bad front shocks. front tires actually bouncing while you are driving
5. since you feel it more in the STEERING WHEEL the problem should be from the front. Just in case, a bent rear axle can cause it.

The tires are relatively new and recently balanced so I would hope it is not number one or two and the brakes were also recently done which would in theory rule out number three (though nothing surprises me with quality control anymore). It has been feeling a little soft in the front so the shocks are worth a check, any thoughts on the problem being a tie rod end or other steering component? I can't say I've ever replaced or even looked at those recently.

Some of these series trucks had a cast iron plate attached to the rear of the cab as a vibration damper. I may be off on the years a bit but I remember seeing it on one of my trucks back when. And thinking about vibrations, is your C4 equipped with the add on vibration damper ? Some have it, some do not.

I would still check 1 through 3. Once I bought a set of Goodyears to put on a car I was turning. I just happened to look at one of them before they were getting mounted and notice a sidewall looked wierd. On closer inspection I found a hole in the inner belts about the size of a half dollar! The only thing that was there was the inner and outer layer of rubber. As far as the lug nuts goes, the tech who mounted the tires is human. And if he re-packed the bearings I repeat, he's human.
The linkage? That usually causes a "wander" or grabbing any crack in the road. Not usually a vibration.

Coil-sprung Ford with a vibration? Death Wobble? Check your radius arm bushings as they are probably so cracked and worn out. No body thinks of those whether 2 or 4wd.
