ECM Reset

On another thread, a member asked about resetting the computer after installing a mod. The general consensus is to pull the neg. cable off the battery and wait 10-15 min. Afterwards, when restarting, your gauges should jump to max and hold for a sec, then settle, indicating a successful reset. My issue is on my truck, I have NEVER seen the gauges do that after an attempted reset. This leads me to believe that I have never reset the computer, and I have done many mods, so you could imagine how many times I have tried. Are the jumping gauges common on ALL years of Expy ? Is there another method I can use ? Trying to unplug the ECU is a pain, so maybe a fuse ?

My guage needles did jump, but my radio presets remained the same. Shouldn't they have reset also?

By the way, I see that you added a 75mm TB. Did you notice an increase in HP and if so, by what %? I'll be getting mine next week.

Throttle response was greatly improved. Much more torque off the line. I can't give you a % number. But it was definitely noticeable.

I've reset mine about half dozen times. Each time the gauges did jump, but I've never lost my radio presets. I've heard that you should disconnect the neg. battery cable for a minimum of 20 minutes and turn your headlights on. I guess the theory is that will drain any reserve power stored in the system.....even though I don't know how there could be a reserve.

I waited a few hours with the lights on and still managed to keep the radio presets...

Rtpjunior, did you have to mess with your IAC when you installed your TB?

Okay, I disconnected both pos. and neg. terminals to the battery, left the headlights and hazard lights on, and let it sit for an hour. After reconnecting everything, my gauges did not jump at startup. I lost the radio presets, and the avg MPG stored in the overhead console. Am I doing something wrong ?

I replaced the IAC about a month before doing the TB. The new one (TB) does not interfere with it.

Mine don't jump on ECM reset either. But all the codes do reset themselves. I have had the Ecm reset by the dealer and still no gauge jump. I do notice that after reset the fuel mileage is terrible for about the first 30 miles. After that it seems to level off. There is a relearn process that the ECM goes through. It has to relaern idle, and driving habits. It might idle rough or higher than usual, but after it relearns it levels out and runs normally. I hope this has helped some. I think the second generation X's have the gauge jump feature but the first generation does not.

I think the4by4freak got right - your ECU should've been reset when you pulled the cables off. The way I figure, if the radio has been reset, then so has the ECU.

I wouldn't worry about it.
