what year did they start putting obd1 in cars thanks

Overall, 1978 in the US. Earlier overseas. Protocols and connectors varied by model until they were forced to adopt obdII. Even then personalities come into play.

In 1980 GM had on-board diagnostics. You had to count the number of "check engine" flashes to get a code (no scanner connection). My 1982 F250 has (had) OBD (called EEC-III). You use a "Star" tester or a voltmeter (and count needle sweeps) at the under hood self-test connection to determine the fault code.
