Heat Shield (?) on muffler gone

Yesterday I had my truck washed, and I guess the water jets that wash the undercarriage were so strong that the outer layer of my muffler came loose and was hanging off. The truck is a '93 F250 7.3l diesel, and I'm pretty sure the original muffler is still on it, so I suppose it had just rusted through, and the water knocked the outer layer of metal on the muffler loose.

It made a racket driving down the road, so I had my husband pull the loose piece off. The piece of metal that came off basically covered the underside of the muffler.

Is this a "must fix now or you'll be in danger" sort of thing, or can this wait a week or so? I know that people drive around with holes in their mufflers all the time, but my husband is insisting that it's dangerous to drive around without the heat shield (is that the correct term?) on the muffler.

I am supposed to haul my horse to a show 3 hours away tomorrow--should I get this fixed before I leave, or can it wait until I get back next week?

Won't hurt a thing I had that exact same thing happen on my 85 f250 and now i think it actually runs cooler.

Just be smart...if there are any wires, rubber, gas line, etc cover them in something to help protect them otherwise you don't need to ever worry about it!!
Have fun at the horse show...and NICE truck

Happy Wrenching

Great! Thanks so much for your response!

I do love my truck...I just wish it had 4WD. With all the rain we've had this year, I have to be VERY careful about how & where I park the truck & trailer when I go foxhunting, to shows, or on a trail ride. Had to get pulled out with a BIG tractor last weekend...

Yes 4x4 is great...to compensate you should invest in a winch and a Hi-Lift, I have 4x4 and I doubt I could live w/o them!!!

Actually the cover is a stone gaurd. It has nothing to do with heat. I deliberately ripped mine off the old Jeep. Kept collecting gravel. Sounded like a herd of cattle.

Hmmm...interesting! I guess that just confirms that it's nothing to be too concerned about.

Thanks!
