overheating advise.

Here is the situation. My typical delta between ECT/EOT is 5-8 degrees with no load in Texas heat. Yesterday we loaded our camper (7000lbs) and hit the road. About 30 miles into trip I noticed (with ScanguageII) ECT@207 and EOT@226 @70MPH. I have never had that high of a delta before. I also noticed that the temps did not normalize even when I dropped my speeds to 50. It took reducing speeds to 30-40 for the EOT temp to drop into the teens.

Within the past 2yrs I have have head gaskets, studs, bullet-proof EGR cooler, alternator, water pump, batteries, thermostat, oil cooler, fan clutch, and I'm sure a few other things.

Is this a sign of clogged oil cooler, or flaky fan clutch? I am going to use the Torque app to see if it will provide any codes to aid in diagnosing the issues.

You help is appreciated.

If that's as high as your oil temp's are getting I wouldn't sweat it. You MAY have a clogging oil cooler (do you have a filter?) but with a bulletproof EGR cooler I don't think I'd interrupt my vacation.

While partsman is right the temps are not unheard off. You may want to look at the whole coolany system, radiator air flow abilities, fan etc.

Sometimes it is not just one thing but an accumulation of things, by themselves individually not enough to cause a problem but combined can cause a problem.

It's just concerning that all of a sudden that I'm getting that high of deltas... and when I was coming back from dropping off the camper my delta was still 11 degrees with no load at in town speeds. Would a good coolant system flush resolve this issue? Its been 30K since it was changed out.

is there a easy way to test if the fan is working properly? When the fan clutch went out last time the mechanic stuck his hand in there and stopped it....he was sure that was the problem...I'm not that sure...and definitively not that stupid.

I just thought it was a little soon to be plugging an oil cooler with a coolant filter, but it's no unheard of.

AFA the fan goes, you really need a way to monitor fan speed and what it's doing. Have you code scanned the truck?

Either SGII or Torque can tell you desired fan speed, so what I'd be comparing is that versus what you hear. There is no doubt in my truck when the fan starts getting over 1000rpm on up. Check the wiring to the fan too. But that is the first thing I'd suspect with all you've reported (fan not working right)...

Another thing I've noticed.... I setup the high idle switch last year. When I have it on and the engine idling for extended periods (15-30mins) i notice that when I take off the fan comes on for a couple of minutes. Is this normal behavior?
This was happening before my high delta spread began a week ago.

Also the high delta spread was first noticed after my truck sat unstarted for a week.

I'm afraid that the shop that did my HG,fan clutch, water pump, studs, EGR/oil cooler (30K ago) did not properly flush my system. I think they just used tap water. They also refilled with whatever green coolant they had. I had them drain it and flush with distilled ...then refill with ford gold...but I don't believe they ever used the VC9.

I plan to do a VC9 flush myself to see if things improve. Could I possibly cause more problems with this flush? Does the VC9 break down any of the goo that makes its way into the cooler? Is there anything that does break it down?

Thanks for all of the help fellas!

Moe I know your still lurking around here.... What do you think?

I hate to say it but you are doing things back wards. VC-9 cleans scale out of the block and should be done prior to an egr/ oil cooler replacement. It won't help with casting sand or silicate drop out. If they didn't get all of the green out, if it's a/m coolant , it can create problems with the Ford gold.

this is my 3rd oil cooler now... I'm hoping by doing a flush every 50k or so it will keep the oil cooler from plugging up. This was the first VC9 flush I think...

Also the mechanic said he could not fit the fumoto valve on the passenger side(where the starter is). Has anyone else ran into this issue? He said even if the nipple wasn't on the fumoto there would not be enough clearance with the starter mounted....
