I have a 79 f250 with a 460. I've had it for about a year or so now and have replaced fuel pump, gas tanks, and fuel selector switch. And it has ran 100% perfect until a month ago. I have a pretty long hill going to my house and I like showing off my trucks power going up that hill. Well it decided to starve itself of fuel and started coughing and sputtering and I had to really lightly use the throttle for it to run smooth. And it's done it ever since. My fuel filter is clean and I replaced the fuel pump about 3 months ago. It has an edelbrock 750 on it. I would really appreciate it if I could get some answers cause it's got me stumped!
It's always possible that the pump has gone or something clogged the filter even though you replaced them recently. Another possibility is that you are getting weak spark that will not ignite the heavier fuel mixture when you're under load, causing it to miss. Check that all your plug wires are firmly seated. I once replaced half the fuel system before figuring out I just had a loose plug wire.
Wow it's like I wrote this post. I am having the same kind of issue. New tank, pump, filter, Eldelbrock carb all a yr ago. Begain when I took a trip towing a popup trailer over the 4th. About 1/2 way on my trip it began to stumble when I got my foot in it. She would accelerate then after a minute or so bog out... Let up on the gas and she runs fine. Up to this point she ran great. It got worse on my trip, barely running when I got to the campground. The next day she ran great. It did happen a couple times during the trip but not as bad. It sure seems like fuel related. No backfires, black smoke, never died. I did change the fuel cap thinking it was making a vaccum in the tank. No change. So when I get time I want to ck the fuel lines, pump and ck the carb, float level etc. You would thing anything else would show up more often and or cause stalling etc. I'm gonna follow along here to see what anyone else has to offer.
We are in the process of putting the carb back together. It's taken us two hours and there is two little screens over some of the jets and the were filled with all kinds of crap. The bowls also had a thick layer of gunk on the bottom. We took the carb off the truck, tore it apart, used three cans of carb cleaner and sprayed the snot out of it. It was fairly easy just don't get parts mixed up and we didn't rip any gaskets so no need for a kit. We replaced the accelerator and it should be back on in 30 min. Will update after test drive!
I had one of those carbs and fairly regular I would need to pull the idle air mixture screws and either blow a little air thru them or some carb cleaner and it would be good to go for a while..
