9 inch rear
The only info I've got from him was it was "3300s, the biggest gear Ford ever made."
I figured I could put a tach on it, check the RPM vs the speed but I'm almost certain the speedo gear is wrong as well. I'd have to get someone to pace me.
Any tricks to identifying the rear gear?
Jack up and support both rear wheels. Chock the fronts etc. so you don't roll over yourself. Put the trans in neutral, and turn the drive shaft, counting the turns of the shaft vs. one turn of the wheels--both turning at the same speed. You might need a couple helpers to turn the wheels while you watch the shaft--probably a better way to do it.
You can check MPH vs. RPM, but only if you have a known good speedo.
You can drop the carrier and count the ring and pinion, but that's a bit messy.
I might go with the follower and tach, but I don't have a tag yet.
How many teeth on the ring and pinion? Not liking forward to the smell of gear oil, but it may be quicker than getting someone to follow.

I'll borrow my dad's and take it for a drive.
I've got to pull my tach from my Comet, probably just rig it for a quick run.
I need to get the tag and get it legal. I've had the truck for a year and a half and just decided I'm going to keep it as is for now.
As though I need another project.
