Howdy yall,
so ive been having this very strange thing happen to my truck lately, when i fire it up in the morning sand the engine is still cold, the engine will hold a high rpm after throttle is applied (hit the gas, rev up the engine, take your foot off the gas, and the engine stays at a high rpm), it will eventually come back down but only after a few seconds. Furthermore, if you take it too high into the revs, the engine surges with a huge puff of black smoke and then drops back down to idle. After this all happnes the engine sounds like its missing and runs like crap. This only occures when it is cold, when its warm the engine runs fine....ANY ideas???? i just replaced the injection pump a few months ago but have it cranked all the way up, could this be causing the surge?
what condition was the replacement ip in? reman or used?
you maxed out the fuel screw.is the engine turbo or n/a?
when you want to set the cold high idle solenoid, you want to set it without the engine running.turn the key forward to run,and while the WTS is active, press the pedal to the floor and then release.this sets the high idle without revving the cold engine.
what condition are the injectors in?
did you have the ip timed?
The ip was reman. Injectors are stock, goin to replace them soon as well as get the engine timed. Yes it has a turbo. And yes I know about the high idle solonoid, I don't think It has anything to do with that. Cause the of miss after a rev...
Mine does that too. When the RPMs get really high going down the road with the engine still somewhat cold(T 19 dog tranny for ya), it will clatter really loud and lurch forward without pushing any more on the go pedal. after about 5 min of this, it smooths out and runs like a dream. It still does that to me and still has me stumped. All stock parts as far as I know. I'm almost 100% sure my injection system, like most of my truck's parts, is original. Now, every now and then, it'll start clattering very loud blow black smoke like crazy with the motor hot and do the same thing. Only this time, I loose power and it's a dog. Let it sit for a while and it's fine. I do know the PO took the water separator out and just attached the two ends with hose clamps. I'm thinking maybe an air leak or air intrusion.

it's time for a reman ip.the timing advance internals are faulty.
you can read about how they work here: Oliver Diesel - Engines & Outdoors
I figured it was the IP crapping out. Will it mess up my engine running it like that? What is a good IP rebuilding company that wont burn a gaping hole in my pocket? sure sounds cool when it does that. Kinda like a big rig.
