Hot and bothered.....

Good day all!

I have a 2005 F250 with the 6.0 powerstroke engine.

Recently the garage I use suggested a rad flush and fill (2months ago). I told them to go ahead.
Since then I have had intermittent times where the coolant temp gusage spikes and i get the ondash warning message to check coolant temp. Only problem is, it's not overheating....

After about 10 min of continued driving the guage returns to mid pin and all is well....that is until yesterday.
I was in downtown Toronto and it was super hot outside, about 100 degrees. The guage spiked again and this time the truck responded by restricting speed to max 30 mile/hr. I limped along till i could find a spot to park. I lifted the hood and again no overheat or overflow of any kind.

I let her sit for an hour and had a coffee. Checked back and found that the engine had cooled off and the guage was at mid pin again. Jumped in her and drove like a dream....

What gives?

Coolant temp sensor? How do you know its not over heating. Just because its not puking or steaming doesn't mean its not over heating. Do you have an inferred temp gun? Many reasons for over heating. You need to be more specific. Does it do it at highway speeds or idling speeds in stop n go traffic? By deciphering your post it sounds like it over heats in traffic but goes back to normal once your moving. That would point towards insufficient air flow across the radiator. That would indicate possibly a bad fan clutch. Spin it when the trucks cold (and off). Does it free wheel easily and is there excessive play in the shaft? Then its likely shot. You should hear loud fan noise when its hot. Which means the clutch is working and engaging when its hot. No fan noise then its shot. Did the shop replace the hoses, belt and more important the T-Stat? A HD Stant T-Stat is cheap. Replace it when you replace the clutch if it shows to be faulty.

If it were me I would get back to the garage that flushed the system and have them fix it. Not that what they done was wrong, but they are already familiar with it's history.
On a side note, check the degass cap. If it is the OEM cap, then I most strongly urge you to change it immediately!!! They have a history of not holding the proper pressure and allowing your engine to burn up via overheating. Should be only about $4.00 American.

I would invest the 180.00 into a scan gauge II so you can monitor all your temps in real time. The dash "gauge" really isn't anything more than a fancy TEMP light like old cars had.
