Hey guys, long time no visit ehh? Anyhow I just bought another 96 7.3 single cab dual wheel flatbed. This is my 6th 7.3 BTW. Im still wanting a 6.0 but don't wanna pay the 6.0 cost.
On to my question, its got a 5 speed in her and every so often it jerks in 5th gear. Like it jumps outta gear for a split second then goes right back in. It only happened when it wasn't really at operating temp... Also it grinds going into 4th just a little. I don't have to fight it or anything just kinda grinds for a split second when I put her in 4th. It won't do it if I keep RPM's low.
^^^^ +1; make sure it's not a hydraulic/linkage issue first. If it's revving up in fifth gear but not accelerating the truck, then engaging again, that's most likely the clutch. You're only noticing it in fifth because you're probably doing lower RPMs in top gear. Try "lugging" it in third or fourth, say, cruise at 25 MPH in fourth on a level road, and then give it some go-pedal, and see if it does the same thing. If so, your clutch is going.
How's the tranny fluid level, and how old is the fluid, and what brand/flavor?
Don't want to pay 6.0 costs? Around here you can buy one cheaper than an equally equipped 7.3 superduty. The older 6.0's dont' bring much more than a 7.3 obs truck. Newer ones are a little higher.
Maybe you meant repair costs....
JK, they are a good motor, but NEED a few upgrades to be reliable.
