Son just bought a 1978 Ford f250 and wants me to help him restore it. We started out on 7/15 to rebuild carb it is a motorcraft 2bbl. he wants to make the truck as original as possible but ran into a snag. Called the ford dealer to get a dashpot and idle stop solenoid but ford no longer carries these parts and I can not find a new source as of yet. do we really need these parts or can we just run without.
You can probably do without.
The function of the idle stop solenoid is to help prevent "dieseling" on shutdown.
If the carb still has the original ID tag on it, post the info and I'll look up the part numbers and do a search and see if I can locate any of the parts.
The tag will read something like D8TE-AA.
BTW welcome to FTE. Lots of good knowledgeable people here.
You can likely do without the dashpot. You can try without the idle stop solenoid by maintaining the curb idle speed with the standard curb idle screw (previously would have been adjusted by moving the idle stop solenoid bracket), but you'll have to see if it diesels when you shut it off.
