Camshaft timing?

Hi,

I'm rebuilding the 300 for my 83 f150 4spd 3.55 gears. Its bored 30 over, the head was shaved a little to true it up and I'm putting in a Crower 19210 cam. Stock carb and exhaust for the moment with possible efi exhaust manifolds. I use the pickup to haul my atv out to the mountains and for just cruising local gravel and logging roads. It'll hardley never see speeds over 60 mph if that. I was wondering if you guys think it would be worth it to buy adjustable timing gears and to run it 4 degrees advanced or just use the regular cloyes gears I got in my kit? I am looking for low end power but still would like decent mileage if I have to do some short highway spurts.

Thanks for the Input,

Kyle

Check with Crower, it may already have 4 degrees of advance as it's ground.

Just gave crower a call and they said it already has 4 degrees of advance built in. So that would put the cam at 0 degrees compared to the 4 degrees of retard from the factory right? If thats the case do you think I would benefit from buying the adjustable gear set and install it straight up so I would have 4 degrees advanced from zero?

Thanks,
Kyle

Again, check with Crower but I would assume that's 4 degrees advanced from straight up. I doubt they use the stock cam geometry in any shape or fashion other than firing order.

Thought I would follow up for anyone that might be curious in the future. Called Crower and they said that their cams are ground with a 4 degree advance from straight up.

Very wise to check like you did- if you put 4 more degrees of advance on it you might have issues with detonation. The safest thing to do is to degree it once installed and verify it from the card to make sure the ICL is 4 degrees early when installed straight up. Sounds like a great setup though, truck should be a lot of fun to drive! Cheers/TK

Got it all put together and running this evening after being slowed down because of some of Ford's fine engineering. Did the 30 min break in and set the timing etc. Runs pretty damn good just sitting there. I'll get my exhaust all hooked up tomorrow and see how it drives. So excited!
