Sled pulling questions.

Hey guys. I'm looking to get into sled pulling with my 95 F350. It's a manual, with 4:10 gears. Looking to run stock class. I've been reading up on the rules, but still have a few questions.. To start, 4 high, or 4 low? Witch gear is best to be in? What do I need on my hitch, Hook or ball? As a rookie, should I weight the front? I'd appreciate all the info I can get, thanks.

Having never pulled before...

I believe you go with 4x4 Low, 3rd gear, but depending on tires, track, and horsepower maybe 2nd gear. The hitch is usually a big eye, like 3"-4" ID depending on the outfit you'd be pulling with. The chain on the sled would have the hook on it.

Just remember if something breaks, don't slam on the brakes and the sled might rear-end you!

Stock class I don't think you can have weight on the front. I'm not very familiar with the stock class they usually have 2.6 class at the pulls at my county fair

Yeah, i'm not sure on that either. Your best bet is to look at the rules provided by the organization thats putting it on.

2X on what has been said above. The rules of your local pulling organization are what will dictate what you can add for weights, and more than likely what you will need to have for a hitch as well as how high it can be above the ground.

As for what gear to pull in, I believe you will want to use 4x4 Low, 2nd gear, or maybe 3rd gear. Again, that depends on your tires, the track conditions and how much power you're putting down. If in doubt, I would use 2nd gear as you may not get the sled moving real fast, but you won't bog it down and stall out either.

Sounds like fun! Take a video and post it up if you can!!

Here are a couple of threads on the subject i have saved. I believe RubberDuck is an experienced puller. I would like to to try pulling also but don't have the guts to try it yet. Mostly worried about u joints etc but I really don't have a reason to doubt them LOL. Search "sled pull" in the threads and you will get plenty of info.

Before you go out there and try to pull with your truck, you need to get a dual disc clutch, traction bars, and a hitch.

More info on what has been done to your truck will help figure out where to start with gears. Things like power mods and tire size will help. If you at least have upgraded injectors and tuning, you should be able to pull 4 low and 3rd gear without a problem if you get a good clutch in it.

The event I'm going to, lists the class as "street stock" but I've seen it on others called work stock or 2.6 I believe. I have traction bars, clutch and a hitch. Engine is stock, with 3" dp to stack, 6637 intake, and TS 6 pos. and like I said before, 4:10 gears. 34" Goodyear duratrac tires.

So you're running a luk stock replacement single mass setup? You're going to smoke that clutch in a hurry sled pulling

Does LuK only make stock replacements? Or do they make a twin disc to? The previous owner told me is a twin disc. I'm guessing there is no way of telling without splitting the trans eh?

I don't think LUK makes a dual disk

South bend dual disk clutch is a MUST for pulling. And don't try 3rd 4low without it, you won't hardly get rolling but you will be rulling smoke from the clutch. Don't ask me how I know..

Yeah, your going to need a new clutch setup and its not going to be easy on the wallet. I run a Valair dual disc in my truck. Look into Valair and South bend. Most of us on this site run Valair. Anyways, your going to need a dual disc. Either a ceramic or sintered iron friction material.

My suggestion would be to wait until you can do some power upgrades and clutch upgrades before you start pulling.
