How hard/easy for anyone who reads to find a 6' box in your area, in GOOD shape?
I Took my box off today by myself..(few minor injuries) because one side is rusted, Anyway I phoned around to the wreckers around town here and down in courtenay. They all said they are hard to come by and one place said if 1 was found,in good shape it would go for roughly 800.
Oh well..I still have some people I need to talk to yet.
They are scarce as hen's teeth most places. Getting one from a place where they seem to have them Like the US Southwest would kill you with shipping costs.
VERY hard; I've been looking for a good shortbox for about 2 years, now.....
I'm about to plop down $2500.00 for one of the 45 pound fiberglass beds and quit worrying about it.
Let's see... that'd drop my curb weight down from 4700 to a mere 4200 pounds... fiberglass hood would put me at about 4100 pounds.... I could lose 50 pounds.... that would put me at 4050 pounds.... I think my fuel mileage is about to increase, fellas...
PS How the hell did you get the bed off by yourself? Did you just flip it over the side? I was planning on doing that but decided to get 3 other buddies and we lifted it off with ease.
its not all that hard just use 2-10 ft 4X4's and 4- saw horses.
un bolt the bed, jack it up, slide the 4X4's under the bed set them on the saw horses, pull out from under the bed
Hmmm... That place is near Cedar Rapids IA, only 250 miles out of my way when I go up to Minnesota or back. 250 miles might be worth renting a Uhaul trailer on the way back.
I hate driving in Iowa tho, worse than western Kansas and it has a 65mph speed limit that is enforced that makes it worse yet. Travel thru there on I-35 gives new meaning to "mind numbing"!
Heh , so not so easy to get my paws on then eh, without spendin a small fortune.
Yeah, i just got the end on to the bumper, then I pushed it off the side onto some milk crates, slowly, not like i tossed it off. Then I rolled it onto the lawn. Wasnt to bad.
Im now thinkin if I cant get a decent box off someone, I will just buy the two sides and rtack them on, because the floor and end are in good shape, just the sides are **** up.
thanks for the replies fellas.
Oh, 1 more thing. Is it illegal to drive without it on? Its probably diff. for each state/province, maybe Mil1ion might know?
AND what should I do with the gas tank filler hose stickin way out?? any suggestions??

emagine this, getting a 3/4 inch hydralic dump box off of the back of your truck . even worse by yourself. thats what i had to do cauase everybody was gone that day.
not fun, i know of a place near the quad cites in illinios that has rust free beds for all fords
yeah that rustfree place seems to have anything and everything but i cant see paying $1,200 and someodd dollors for a bed..i email them for a price on a long bed for and i about chit myself....i could see paying $500 at the most but for that kinda of money might as well go with figerglass.. take it easy
Originally posted by 73Custom You could always go with a flareside box. I think a 80-86 flareside box looks great on a 73-79 pickup - but that's just my opinion.

have u ever seen a a '79 flareside bed? they look sweet!!! i mean, they make the '80-'87 look like crap. i like the look of the rolled steel and round edges , but that's just me.
Yeah I have one, and no it's not for sale. Although that was a double negative its still not for sale. The 78-9 stepsides are nice. kinda look like they belong on a 60-66.
I just bought today a late 70's 6 foot stepside bed that is near perfect bed for $400. And up here in northern Ohio thats a deal. I just have to put a new wood floor in it and buy new hardware.
