I have a i6 in my 81 ford, and i'm fixin to do a complete overhaul of the entire truck, and maybe a 4x4 conversion... I want to know...
1.stock, how much power does a i6 make, and at what rmp level?
2.is the i6 worth building up, or would u just drop in a v8?
3.is the c4 trans. worth keepin?
My plans for the engine are new inatke manifold, 4 barrel, bigger cam, new igntion, re wiring, rebuild, heddman headers, cat back exhaust(no muffler), and a few other small things
My plans for the c4 is shift kit, racing trans. kit from performanceunlimitedusa, and a torque converter if i can find one.
Do you want to go real fast or pull a house?
IMO the I6 has way more torque....
There are far more "performance" upgrades for the 302, 351...
If you going 4wd, is this for mudding, rock climbing, backroad boredom? What size tires? There are tons of pros here. (I am not one of them) that can help out for major projects... The rest of us know a little of everything, just enough to get us in trouble
Well, i have horses, and i need a truck to pull them...I've been pullin with this truck for while now, and it can pull a house down, but anytime i start goin up hill, it just crawls, it wont carry no speed. BTW, this is a bumper hitch trailer, not a gooseneck.
I want this truck mostly for fun, but its also goin to be one, i can go riding around with friends in. It is getting a frame off restoration, and i might put it in a couple fun car shows for the hell of it.
I want eneough power and torque to have fun to. I just want to know i can soke my tires if i want to. I dont really care about top end, i just want that monster torque!
Is the i6 a good engine for like mudding or just offroading? B?c my truck is alos getting a 4xr coverion, i hope lastchance e-mails me soon!
If you like to spin the tires, and go fast get a v-8. If you like to pull out other people, save gas money and have a motor that you can absolutely abuse then get a 6. They are built heavier then V-8's, exept MAYBE the 460 and the FE family. (Ford's only three industrial motors)
A 300 is going to give you torque. A v-8 is going to give you HP. A stock 300 makes about 150 HP over the years. They make their power pretty low, but a lot of that has to do with the tiny carb they got stuck with.
What kind of a truck are we talking about?
They C-4 is fine. The C-6 is better, but If you have the 4 stick with it. BM makes some nice stuff for them as far as I know.
If i can do the 4x4 copnverion, I'm adding a 4 inch susp. lift and a 2 inch body. I may go on up to a 6 in lift if i can afford, but i know susp. lifts are way more complicated than they sound...lol.
I want to do a little mudding, goin through a cornfeild after a big rain, that kind of stuff. I dont care about top end, i just figured since the I-6 had so much torque, it'd be good at smokin the tires...lol.
How much torque does the I06 make? I cant beleive they only make 150 horses...that just dont seem right.
And about making power low, i'm adding a new aluminam intake with a 4 barrel, bigger cam that is specially configured for more torque and towing power, headers, and cat back exhaust, with no muffler. Plus, a bigger electric fuel pump, new igntion box, new coil, better distrubator..etc.
Plus, in the tranny, i'm ading a racing kit, and a shift kit from b&m that will alow me to make shift adjustments.
I figure after all that is done, i'll be making decent power at all ranges. I guess i will beuild this engine for torque...I have a chvey for fun...and i know i'm gonna get eat up for saying that..but it is a really nice truck making about 600 horses!
thanks alot millertime, ur the kind of person that keeps people comin back to this board...lol....I know that sounded korny
If you have the 81 I think that your truck would have come with the TTB front end. I don't know much about those, other then A lot of people don't like them for some reason. If your truck could use the older solid axel set-up it would be cheaper and easier to lift. Probably the easiest, if you know how your way around trucks would be to throw a leaf spring front end under it like 3/4 Fords use. (and chevy half tons). They don't ride very great, but they are simple and much stronger then the TTB from what I hear. There is a lot of information on the net about converting the TTB to solid axel, you miught learn something by checking them out.
I would stick with the 6, unless you want 600 horsepower out of this truck too. I think mine is supposed to make about 300 HP. There is a web site I think it is called bigblocksix.com that has a lot of desktop dyno runs with the 300. It is really worth looking at. The desktop dyno is not perfect, but it is better then guessing.
Well, My truck is only 2wd right now...I dont know what axle i will swap in for the front..I dont know what i'm gonna do. I hope i can get lastchance stuff so i can do the conversion...If not, I'll go to some garage and have then convert it over.
and no, I dont want my 300 makin 600 horses, I have a chvey makin that much power that i run at the local drag track and go for special drives in. I'm buildinmg this truck just for fun with tons of torque. I dont care about the ponies for this ford. I just want something that is fun to drive, i can off roading in, and pull a house down.
thanks alot
BTW, never mind that link, it was for a different post
