3.54 vs 4.10 in a F250

I'll be picking up my D60 axles next week. They have 3.54 gears compared to my current 4.10's. That's only a 14% difference in gearing. With 33" tires and an NV4500 tranny will I really notice a difference? I'm actually looking forward to a little friendlier gearing in my 69 F250.

Hi,

Sure you will, ..... it will be 14% different. Meaning if you use to tach 3000rpm at 70mph you will now tach 2580rpm.

Take care,
Lee

Yeah I get there will be a 14% difference in rpm's, that's why I posted it but right now I can't even do 70 mph. On Pirate one long time poster stated that there is no noticeable difference in torque between 4.10's and 3.73's and the difference between 4.10's and 3.54's is barely noticeable. Does anyone on here have actual experience with running 3.54's in their F250? As mentioned the drop in rpm's is welcome, will I lose much in towing ability?

Right now I'm running the NP435 but will be installing an NV4500 5sp.

what engine, what cam?

if your cam is designed for low end torque you should be good to go. but if designed for higher end rpms will be a little relearning on driving techniques with coming off idle. what clutch 11" or 12"? yes you will notice a difference between 4.10 and 3.50 gears. you will be putting more load on the clutch down in the low end. you will be shifting a little slower compared to a 4.10 gearing. what tire size are you running? 3.50 gearing will let you hold the gearing longer and less clutching. I'm not familar with your truck so weight and tire size and applications are my questions. towing or just daily driver. catch you later and have a good day.

Sir,

No disrespect intened.

If you are refer'un to the "Seat of yer pants" feel'un, then "yes" you will feel alittle differecnce in respect to tow'un. Generally speak'un, low gears are just better at tow'un the heavy loads.

If I were you I would not be to concerned wid' yer gear choice. If you had went to a 3.09 and intended to tow heavy loads then I would be concerned.

Take care,
Lee

4.10's and a NV4500 are awesome. If it's only a 390 your running, it wouldn't pull itself very good with 3.54's in overdrive at 70.

No worries Lee

Stock '76 360 for now but have plans for a 445 stroker install over the winter.

So the final incarnation hopefully will be 69 F250 Crew Cab 4x4 running 3.54 D60's front & rear, p/s, power brakes, nv4500 tranny, married np205 TC, 445 Stroker.
