I had weighed my '08 F-250 extended cab, short bed 4X4 with a full tank and all my crapola and it was 8100. But, I had never weighed my '02 Airstream Classic 31' with a slideout. I had to take it to the new Airstream dealer in Nampa, Idaho and the local Horseshoe Bend weigh station was open so I drove through. My hitch weight was right at 1,000 lbs and the 'Streamer weighed 8640 at the axles. It was less than I expected but still nice to know. I have recently changed all my trailer tires from ST's to Michelin LT's. After 3 flats on my trailer with almost new ST tires, it was time to move up a notch to the Michaelins. A lot of Airstreamers are doing the same thing. I also see many 5th wheels now using Michaelin LT's.
Reference to tire manufacture change, I have a Carriage Cameo lite 29FKS with a mty weight of 8100lbs and a hitch weight of 1300lbs. This unit came with double axles and Goodyear 6ply (C) rated ST tires made in USA (original) when I bought it several years ago. Spare tire never put on ground gave up the info. I have since changed (can't find a ST tire made any other place but Korea or China; Goodyear included) to a 10ply (E) rated ST tire that will run 20+ degrees cooler on a hot Florida day. This is the way I'll go in the future; over kill on the weight rating of the tire, you can never have to much tire....
Forgot to ask!!!! I have a '09 250 Super Duty 6.8L LWB Super Cab (68,000 miles) and want to ask you what you think of the Mike's 5 Star tune on your SD. Your setup on truck and trailer is almost the same weight and length as mine. Mind sharing any true life mileage and towing info on your unit??? Just trying to get a perspective on what to expect when I start towing longer distances (fuel cost per mile based on MPG). Thanxs, Sonny
I'll throw mine up until Pappy gets back. Mine weighs probably a little more than yours since it's a CC with the FabFours on the front. I pull a Dutchman Classic 300 5'er and get about 5.5-6 hand calculated depending on wind. Before the tires, I got about 6.5-7. I never towed my current trailer without the 5 Star so can't comment on before and after.
BTW Pappy, Bill's is still waiting for the next trip!
Most folks don't believe me when I tell them my F-250 extended cab-short bed weighs 8100, but you must remember that my front bumper alone weighs over 300 lbs and the rear almost the same. In addition, I'll bet my tool box plus off road crap weighs 300 easy.
I used to run ST tires on my Airstream (AS) until I started having flats and blowouts. Most all of the AS folks with 25 outers + are switching to Michaelin LT's in D or E rated tires. ST tires, even 10 ply rated can't compare with LT's for long term dependability. Most times, the ST's blow out damaging wheel wells, or worse, your black/grey water tanks. LT's may cost more but I won't run anything but LT's. I've just had and seen too many problems with ST's no matter where they are made or who made them.
Mike's 5-Star has really perfomed great for my V-10 and hauling our AS all over the US. Tranny temps, engine temps and shifting have been surpurb and I highly recommend Mike's for towing or just for fun.
