Second time here asking for some advice on my continued search for a Bumpside F-100. How does this one look: ford f100 4x4 ... rare must see !
Seems to have a lot recently done to it and I am planning on having my girlfriend and her dad go check it out this weekend (I'm not from the seattle area and she is). What should I have them specifically check out and how can I make sure its worth what he is asking.
Receipts? If no receipt for anything claimed assume it untrue. Front cab mounts, bottom of the core support, rear bottom of the cab, floors. I am not saying it is not a 390 but many 360s magically become 390s when it comes time to sell. The list of new parts just happens to be items in enclosed areas. Get receipts.
Thanks for the quick response. Is the only way to tell if its actually a 390 to remove the heads? Also, this is one of the more expensive trucks I've looked at but also is the best (claimed) condition. If all of that work has been done then is the truck worth 8 grand? Also those front springs and shocks look different that others that I've seen, are they stock?
I saw another one like this go for the same money. I personally think it's worth that much considering all that's been done to it. It should ride and drive as a brand new 1972! Have them test drive it to make sure. Have them look underneath it for rust. Frame, sheetmetal part of the cab mounts, and/or obvious rust problems. Rust bubbles under the paint. Test the 4x4 to work. With the hubs locked and the transfercase locked have them turn a tight circle. If it's working the front end will kinda bounce a little and not feel like it's turning as smooth as in 4x2.

2X elgemcdlf. Note, Ford NEVER put a 390 in a 4x4 from the factory. Someone would have had to change a 360.
You can check for 360 vs 390 by checking stroke without pulling the heads. I do not remember the numbers but a quick search or maybe someone will chime in on how to do it. Other things I always say when buying a vehicle. When they go to look at it look at the neighborhood. Does an $8K truck belong here or is it totally out of place? Look at the house/yard/person selling. Same question. Does he look like he would own an $8K truck? If it looks out of place it does not mean it is not true but I would be very cautious. It doesn't take much to slap on some bondo & paint to make it pretty. Add some pretty chrome dress up pieces under the hood but under it is nothing? I am not saying this truck is that way. You only know that when looking at it but if it looks out of place to it's environment I would be very cautious.

Nope. Bore is the same. The stroke is different. Either pull the spark plugs so you can spin it over easier and stick something like a pipe cleaner in one of the spark plug holes. While slowly spinning the engine over measure how far the top of the piston goes up and down. Choice two is removing the engine oil pan and looking at the crankshaft's counterweights. The 360 crank's weights are square cut. The 390's are tapered.

As I recall the 360's stroke is 3.50" and the 390's is 3.78".
