I am new to the forum and needing some advice. I have a f100 2 wheel drive short box 4 speed 352. I want to fix it up with power steering, ac, switch to auto w/460, and disc brakes. Would a 1997 f250 donor truck give me the parts I will need or would I be better off with a different year donor truck? I had planned on rebuilding and keeping the I beam suspension.
No, not best choice, you need to find a late 70s, up to 79 F150 460 C6, it will have everything that you will need for a bolt hole upgrade swap. Engine, tranny, power steering and disc brakes. Everything needed in one package.
Take your time looking, don't rush, one will come to you.
You could use the 1997 F250, but it would require a major rethink vs getting a 67-72 frame. Unless you just want to use the motor, and tranny.
For suspension swaps.
I have a 66 F100, but I am currently swapping a 67 F250 underneath to correct accident damage I found on my frame. The wheelbase is 2" longer, but I will know more next week. After I swap my body around, but the frame kick ups are the same.
The 73-80 frame is wider in back, but the cab forward is the same as I heard. The bed should bolt down with new holes drilled.
The 81-96 are completely different, and are not suitable unless you really want to mod one up.
A TTB F250 4x4 would be a different story for me because the TTB rides good, and has nice articulation when used with coil overs. Plus by the time you put the body on you can add a simple body lift to make installing easier. Something that would make a 2wd look funny.
If you have the ability to land an entire truck, the route John gave is the best way to go. You ideally want to find a 1/2 ton truck with the options you want. Being that your in Colorado, you may or may not have a decent selection of said trucks. From that point its just a swap in parts from donor situation.
If you cant find the exact truck, not all is lost. Its just a bit more leg work. Just start with a 2wd 1/2 ton for the brakes and possibly power steering, find the engine and trans you want elsewhere. Add in the options you want as you find them such as AC, and the rest of the items on your checklist.

460/C6 donor: 1973/76 F100 / 1975/79 F150.
460's not installed in F100's after 1976, not installed in 1979 F150's sold new in CA
Thanks Mr. Wilson, and thanks for posting the images so they aren't a pain in the neck. I keep forgetting the 460 year started, so I stick with later 70s to be safe.
A 97 would probably have an Aod behind it correct? And the 385 series started in 68, but wasn't put into a truck until...75 or 76. If you find another dentside with a 460, everything will be easy. If not, prepare for a bit of fav work, but it will fit.

No 460 came with an AOD. See post 5 for 1973/79 F100/350 460 applications. Also installed in 1975/79 Econolines, but engine mounting parts will not work in a F100/350.

As John said find a donor truck from '73-'79 that has what you want. The parts will just bolt right in.
No 460 came with an AOD. See post 5 for 1973/79 F100/350 460 applications. Also installed in 1975/79 Econolines, but engine mounting parts will not work in a F100/350.
Whoops I missed your post. So what is the overdrive put behind a 460? And the ford service manual I have doesn't mention a 460 for 73 or 74, but then again it could be wrong
My '92 F250 SuperDuty with the 460 had an E4OD automatic. It wasn't strong enough as I burned up two of them just pulling a horse trailer that was supposedly well within the truck's rated capacity.
Hmm that's definitely interesting. Them dealers must have been surprised when a 460 came in then. Of course that's back when dealers hired technicians that could do things that weren't in the book.
Great info. I have already found and looked at a 1976 f150 w/460 c-6 it 84000mi. Looked like it had more miles than what read on the odometer, 100000 or 200000 more, but the motor ran well, but truck had alot of play in the steering box.
I am going to look at a 1977 f150 long box tomorow that has the 460 c-6 and other parts I was looking for.
Wondering if it is worth the $ and time to swap out the I beam front for MustangII or other for better handling or if the twin I beam and rear end can use any type of sway bar? I would prefer to keep the I beam. Any thoughts on if the old a/c compressor worth using. The one on the 76 looked like a beast?
