I am looking to replace the "Car like" mirrors for something that looks like they belong on a truck i'd like to know what kind of mirrors you have and how did you put them there...
I'm looking for the 80'-96' truck style swingaway mirrors the ones with two mounting points, or better yet the ones on a later model truck, the ones with one mounting point, for lack of a better discription... Thanks for any ideas...
You cougo to a junkyard and get mirrors off a econoline van of f-series p/u . the trucks and vans all had the two mounting locations all the way up to '91. you could also go to auto-zone, pep-boys,advance, etc. and pick them up new.
I tried the '92-'96 mirrors on my pickup, but thought they were too 'new' looking for my 'old' pickup, so I went with some stock ones.
At first I had aftermarket ones on, but they shake soo much that they are useless on the highway, so I found some factory '78-'79 mirror brackets (much stronger) and used the rounded mirror heads off an '89. I chose to mix and match because the newer doors are a different shape, so the mirror brackets don't look correct on my '73 door, but I liked the newer rounded mirror heads. I'm real happy with the way they turned out.
You can have my mirrors. I'd like to get ones like what you have now. I hate the big ones. Why do you want too change them?
But anyway, if you're going to put elephant ear mirrors on your truck, use the 80 up ones, the back of the mirror head is rounded, looks better the the 79 down ones, IMO.

I have a picture of one of the mirrors I just installed on my truck in my gallery (Choke and Air Cleaner Heat Risers). Got them at the local "auto parts recycler". I found enough nice looking hardware at the yard (had a bus FULL of mirrors), plus some nice stainless bolts, locknuts, etc. at the hardware store.
On a similar note, why in the world did Ford use a mix of stainless and non-stainless parts on mirrors. The stainless still looks great except for where the non-stainless bolts and nuts were... Go figure...
