First, as a new member I must thank everyone for for solutions I've read of in past views of this forum. Now, I wish to share a recent dilemma:
I have a high mileage '94 E-250 with an E40D coupled to a 351. Three transmissions and thousands of $$ later, I've had it with the E40D. I've read of folks wanting to go to a C4, C6, or others. I don't want to do w/o the overdrive aspect on a high mileage engine. To get the remaining mileage out of this van I'd really like to switch to a 5 speed manual. What year(s) tranny/hydraulic clutch combination could be recommended? I'd prefer to have the slave cylinder [I]outside[I] the bell housing vs. inside it as is on my '93 F-150. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. -Alan-
I have a 95 with an E$OD with 300,000 miles and all Ive ever done is change fluid/filter periodiccly. So, my thought is why are you going thru transmissions? Who is doing them? What is going wrong with them? How are they being used?
All I can offer is the memory that in the mid-late 70's, the E vans could be had with either a 3 on the tree (I had a buddy who had a '75 E150 with a 351 and a stick), and circa 1978, Ford offered a 4 speed manual overdrive trans in the vans (I had a '78 F100 pickup with that trans).
In theory, the old 4 speed OD would be a good swap, but the problem is that the trans was an old toploader 4 speed that swapped 3rd and 4th gear positions and put an overdrive where 3rd used to be. Over time, the countershaft bearings would fry.
In all honesty, I think you would be best to get a solid E4OD in your van, or sell out and buy a more modern van. Your '94 can't be worth that much, and I'm guessing a replacement van might not cost a lot more than the work required to replace transmissions, especially in the case of a manual trans transplant.
AODs have OD, they bolt to 351s and they can be built very strong (google AODominator) and if you find a proper PCM that does not have tranny logic in it, will run just fine.

I agree.....if changed once per year, you'll never have a failure.
I was working under the dash of my 95 E350 bus and was looking at that possablity of going to a manual. Not much if any space is there for a clutch pedal assy and even less space near the booster for the clutch master cylinder. I bet it can be done but its all going to be custom work. Now if the clutch was a cable pull type, then there would be space......hmmm cable pulled clutch ZF5 tranny........
I miss that 3-on-the-tree Ford van my friend had......fun driving it around.
