Finally got to spend some time working on my daughter's '77 f-100 step side this weekend, and we were able to get it running! It has been sitting for about a year, in which time we have dropped a "new" 300 and an AOD trans into it. We were having some problems figuring out the wiring, but I finally got it all figured out. We put a new ign. module and magnetic pickup in the dizzy. I also had to wire up a jumper wire to the negative side of the coil.
It sounds decent, especially with no muffler and just a short pipe exiting under the cab. The exhaust/intake gasket is leaking, as exhaust could be seen coming out. Found out one of the power steering hoses has a leak too. Ordered a new head gasket, exhaust/intake gasket, valve cover, and water neck gaskets. It probably doesn't need the head gasket, as the exhaust looked fine, but I'd like to freshen it all up while it is apart.
Now I have to let her get her license...
Right you are sir.... I was under the impression that the "flare side" designation did not come into use until the 80's bull nose trucks, as they actually used a badge with the term on it. However, after a cursory wiki-search, it seems that the term has been used since the 50's, when Ford offered it as the lower cost version to the style side... Good catch. Now I must go apologize to my daughter's truck for inferring that it had anything in relation to a *gulp* Chivvy....
