flatbed-cab (headache) rack? looking for ideas....
looking for some ideas for a 50's/60's looking "headache" rack for the front of my flatbed.
I like the look of some of the that era brush/push bars I've seen posted here before, so similar in design is something i'm currently thinking about.
couple pics of my bed, with the 2" old oak board i'm pretty sure I'll be using and without.
I sketched one idea I've had....
only things i'm pretty sure of is i'm using square head nuts and bolts to attach and the expanded steel in 3 sections.
Build the one you drew. It looks great. Based on the cool artifacts on the bed and your shop walls, coupled with the desire for square head nuts and bolts, you obviously have great taste in old trucks. Good to see you're keepin it real........Now go build that thing and send us a photo or two.
I wonder if it wouldn't look less "busy" if you used 1" flat stock on 6" centers for the verticals? and use flat stock for all of it? Are you really going to be hauling stuff you need to keep out of the cab, or is it primarily for aesthetics?
still not sure on final design, been searching google pics for some 40-60's stake bodies and flatbeds.... no luck
so I've made a little progress today. the top part is 1" flat stock and the bottom is 1 1/2". (welded the expanded medal in middle ) I might be able to get some brass hex rods, it's got me thinking about using them in some way.
I really like the "cactus sunrise"....
I'm still thinking about going alittle crazy with mine.... possible make some metal "Ivy" and weave in/out and all around.
Search terms like blacksmith or wrought iron bring out some creative types. I do some forge work from time to time. I have made a spider web truck bed extender for my тфуфта Тцйдга. I use it mostly around Halloween. It is decked out with large orb weaving spiders eating plastic roaches. Pretty scary, huh kids?

I've searched and found some really nice looking racks, .....
but i'm not wanting a spiderweb, laser cut, "new style" look even though some look like works of art. i'm think most were wooden slats back in 50's
so I had alittle time this morning and tacked more together, i'm not sure if I like it or not .... it's not coming out like the "picture in my mind" before starting.
thinking about running rows of twisted baling wire horizontally ever 2 or 3 inches around re-bar
That's pretty much what the front bumper brush guards looked like, so, my thoughts are that it may well be more "period correct" than you think.
What about some barbed wire with the barbs smoothed down so it looks wicked but wouldn't be quite so likely to gouge your eye out? I'm just thinking out loud. I'm not saying that's a good idea!
Personally, for MY TASTES, I would add something like lizards running up it to try to keep it from looking too much like a bed. However, the brush guards certainly did look like a big ol' brass headboard. Now I've gone and said it..
Edit - I do think that it looks really good on the truck.
I like it too. And I'm thinking of stealing your bias-ply tire/wheel/hubcap wall art idea. Pretty much my favorite part about old trucks, but I tend to run radials these days for practical reasons........
a couple update pics, gonna add a light, finish welding and paint.
