Alright my driver side mirror has gone bad. When I start the truck up, the vibrations cause it to point down within a couple minutes, as does driving. Been looking for a replacement and on all the mirrors I'm finding, the top mounting bolts are above the support but on my truck they are below the support.
Here is an illustration of what I mean: (These are images I found on Google, Not my images)
Like my truck:
Like every mirror I'm finding:
Is this a problem? Can the mounting bracket be flipped? I checked LMC Truck and Rock Auto and they don't even have what I need..
I'll try it. I went to adjust the mirror about a year ago (the trucks really just been sitting since then) it was stiff and some rust flakes fell out when it finally moved, and that's about when this all started.
The one's in LMC are the newer style anyway from what I'm seeing.
The 91 and older have the bolts BELOW the bracket.
FORD sells the 92-97 style and they are about $90 a piece.
As for the 91 and older I am not sure if ford still offers them.
I know LMC sell them, but their stuff is JUNK and would be a LAST resort
That is not correct.
Mirrors with bolts above the bracket were never offered by Ford for 92-97. Any mirror you see with bolts above the bracket is aftermarket.
You are correct that Ford still sells 92-97 mirrors and the part numbers are FOTZ17696A (right side, convex glass) and FOTZ17696B (left side). When you order either of these part numbers from Ford you will also receive a Ford drawing that instructs you where to drill the holes for the lower bracket if you are moving from flag mount to this swing lock mirrors. It also comes with two rivnuts for the lower bracket.
Aftermarket on right. OEM on left. The OEM has a better convex on the right mirror than aftermarket. Also the OEM doesn't rust out at the hinges as fast. And the OEM has thicker mounting flanges and thicker swing bar as you can see.
all 3 of my 79's, the 86, 88, 89, 90, and 91 have the bolts above, the 92 had the bolts below.
after i sold the 86,89,90,91, and 92, the next round of newer truck i bought was 2000 and newer.
