I've got a 90 Bronco XLT with the 351 in it. I had the gas tank replaced a month or two ago, and ever since then I'd get an intermitant whine/whirr from the fuel pump - this would be constant, and last for anywhere from 1 - 20 minutes. I haven't heard it for a while, but now I'm getting "dropouts" - just loss of power all of a sudden. It's not total loss, sort of feels like someone's letting off of the gas pedal (even though I'm not!). It happens at any speed, and seems to recover from it quickly & be fine. I'm going to start with the fuel filter, and check the inertia switch. Anybody have similar circumstances? Should I just jump in and do the pump too?
Don't waste your time looking for the inertia switch. They either supply power, or they dont. It's a simple switch. I agree, check for bad ground wires. A bad ground can make things like pumps sound different.
I sort of had the same problem and it was the fuel filter. I could cruise without problems, and then all of a sudden no power an the engine would miss if I tried to give it gas. Once I stopped, and got off the gas, it would be fine. Replaced fuel filter in NAPA parking lot and was on my way without problems.
There have been a few people who reported finding high resistance or even melted terminals at the inertia switch, so it IS worth investigating. If it's suspect, just short one wire to the other to bypass it.
i would still investigate theinertia switch, yes they are simple and are supposed to be on or off but over time the contacters inside can get cruuded up. this would have nothing to do with fuel pump whine.was the fuel pump replaced when the tank was? i feel it should be replaced so you dont have to drop the tank again.a fuel filter could do this loss of power but it would be more likely to happen on acceleration and heavy load. could it be the ac compressor cycleing that feels like a power drop out.my friends F150 does the fuel pump whine but it does it all the time, and it is really loud. check the simple things first because most of the time it is a simple thing.
