I have a 1980 F100, manual transmission 3 speed on the tree and had a catatrophic failure of the shift collar last week. I was stuck driving on the freeway for 50 miles as it failed when I shifted into 3rd gear. I was finally able to safety exit the freeway and getting to my mechanic. Things got worse. I discovered that the shift collar for this truck, E0TZ7228, can't be found anywhere in the country, probably the world. My research led to me to a NOS shop here in CA. The owner had a couple of collars, neither my part. However, the part D9TZ7228 he had was nearly identical except the rim top was too tall by ~3/8 of an inch and the bottom was not fluted at the bottom end to sit in the wiring harness trim cover. In sum, I took the D9 to a machine shop to trim the rim and it works fantastic. Truck now shifts as smooth as butter I was told by so-called 'experts' across the country that it could not be done, that it never work and to buy a used complete column or to convert to the floor. My momma told us 'their is no such thing as can't' and I refused to accept that the D9 couldn't be modified. The one I installed was a geninue, high-quality Ford OEM. The aftermarket D9TZ7228 can be found as ADS0765 from several vendors. So, Ford nation - never give up on your '3 speed on the tree' as solutions are possible with a little imagination and fortitude.
This topic has come up several times in the last few years. Perhaps this could be placed somewhere so that it can be retrieved more easily by other "three-on-the-tree" owners.
Update: my Shift Collar failied again. This tim instead of taking D9TZ7228-C and trimming it, I've found the last 5 E0TZ7228-D that actually fit my 1980+ F100's with a 3 on the tree. I'm going to install 1, keep 1 A's insurance. So, I'll be selling 3 on EBay soon.
