drivers side front tie rod end

In checking my front end the drivers side front tie rod end is loose.
I tried tightening it but it wouldn't and just turned around and around.
There is play and I thought tightening would help but it won't.
Is there some way to hold the other end or is it a sealed unit and
I just need a new one ?
Thanks

You should be able to tell if the play is in the joint or from the nut being loose. If the 'knuckle' is loose no amount of tightening of the nut will help. If it was originally installed properly and the cotter pin was still present it's time to replace. The nut doesn't make the tie rod end stiff it just holds it seated

Thanks and the nut and shaft just turn around and around.
I assume I should get a front end place to replace this since it will
need aligning as well.
Does anyone have any idea at approx. how much this will cost ?
Thanks

You might try hitting the nut with an impact wrench to snug it up. But, if it's original, I'd get it changed out. I have not had this changed yet on my truck to know the cost. How many miles on your rig?

185,000 just getting broke in good.
I tried my impact wrench and it didn't help either.
I'm hoping this isn't too expensive..
Maybe someone who knows the approx. cost will let me know.
Thanks

The drivers side tie rod as a part alone should be less than the alignment. I'd closely look over the rest of your front end. They are super easy to change. I don't know what a shop would charge for labor for it. If you search on here there's quite a few threads about it.

Rockauto has the short one for <$60, and the long one for <$100.
