Pipefitter and welder? Good money to be made, and not a whole lot of labour work to get it! (or at least that is what I have seen in my experiences!)
I got into the wrong trade when I saw all these welders/fitter making such good money for pretty easy work.
I have worked on the pipelines and gas compressors in my off season. Lotsa hours, boy! Pretty smart move to make cash quick, tho... Only 3 years of school vs. 4 for carpentry; plus get your B pressure ticket and a cheap Ford rig with a decent Hobart or Lincoln, and you're all set!
Can't remember all my old welder jokes... Been a while since I was in that field!
Where are you located, anyway? I was in north central Alberta back in my oilfield days.

Cool! Yes, I have done a couple turnarounds in my day. I have also done stainless steel steam tracing at plants. (gotta keep them lines from freezing in Canadian winters!)
Living in Alberta and working in the energy sector, you become quite rounded in your work!
There is sure a wealth of good stuff to be salvaged from the old plants that have shut down. If you can get in there, there are hoards of stainless lines and fittings, electrical cables, etc... Worth a pretty penny, but can be used to make custom brake lines on a vehicle, and you can wire your new garage several times over! LOL
