Worst case scenario

Trying to stay positive, but recently added one and a half gallons of coolant in my 2005 6.0, then drove a 1600 mile trip with everything running great but when I got back I had to add another gallon. I never ran over temp or saw any signs of white smoke, but there was signs of puking out the degas bottle. When I get the problem checked out and find out what the problem is for sure I am wanting to find out the going rate for new head gaskets, studs, egr and what ever else I need to have done would I expect to pay? This is my first diesel and I am on a very tight budget. Should I just fill up the coolant and trade it or just pay the price and hope the truck will last for a good while longer? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

Doing the repair while expensive is far cheaper than a new/new used truck. And once you have done the head gaskets with studs it is likely you will not have anymore problems for a very long time ( at least not with head gaskets which is about the most expensive thing to have repaired )Have you pulled the EGR valve to see if you have moisture in the intake? If it is head gaskets, have them do the standpipes, dummy plugs and the STC fitting as those are the most common source of HPO leaks that cause hot long/no starts. Cant help you on price as I have not had to have head gaskets yet. You also need to have gauges that read live data like scan gauge II or one of the smartphone apps like dashboss for IOS devices or torque for android as the are absolutely necessary for diagnosing these trucks.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, just kind of in the panic mode right now because I know if it is the head gaskets it will be pretty costly. I have not pulled the egr valve yet to check. Thanks, I will try to get to it once the rain stops. will you mess up the O-rings pulling it to check?

the first time I pulled mine I was worried about that too, just be careful and carefully take them off when you clean the EGR and be sure to lube them up good when you put it back together

I know the feeling, mine was a water leak in the radiator.

I just went thru this last weekend. The Degas bottle was empty but no smoke on cold starts. I pulled and cleaned the EGR valve and the intake was dry. When I built my coolant filter I installed a port for a pressure gauge, so I hooked it up and was reading 6 psi after the Stat opened with no spikes in pressure reading's. Upon close examination I found a pin hole leak in the Degas bottle. So don't write it off until you do your home work
